The world is on the cusp of war over Iran’s nuclear program.
President Trump stepped in with this bold move.
And now Donald Trump delivered this scary ultimatum to Iran.
Neoconservatives and those who supported regime change wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have long held a regime change war in Iran as their white whale.
Israel launching a war on disputed intelligence that Iran was 15 days away from a nuclear bomb put the swamp’s dream of American involvement within reach.
The Israeli attack degraded Iran’s nuclear program and decimated the country’s military leadership.
But it couldn’t completely destroy Iran’s nuclear program.
That’s because Iran buried the key nuclear material hundreds of feet below Earth’s surface at the Fordow facility.
Only America has the B2 bombers capable of delivering the bunker busting bombs that could burrow deep enough underground to potentially destroy the Fordow facility.
Bombing Iran comes with risks.
There are disputes that the bunker buster bomb could actually destroy Fordow.
The Guardian reported the military believes only a tactical nuclear strike could accomplish the job.
Deploying a tactical nuclear strike could open the door for Russia to deploy a battlefield nuke against Ukraine, a move which could draw the United States into World War 3.
Bombing Iran also could cause Iran to attack U.S. bases or try and close the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping.
Both would lure the United States into the kind of forever war that President Trump promised to avoid.
And then there is the question of regime change.
Is it really possible for America to just bomb Fordow and walk away from the fight?
If the current regime remains in place, it could reconstitute its nuclear program as it’s impossible to kill every single nuclear scientist in the world who would conceivably work with Iran.
Changing the Iranian regime to a pro-Western government would be the only way to ensure Iran drops the desire for nuclear weapons.
Installing a pro-Western government in Iran would require some level of commitment from Israel and the United States to continue military operations until the current government falls and then to manage the outcomes.
These efforts have always failed in the past in the Middle East.
President Trump understands these risks, which is why he’s yet to join the war chorus and greenlight a strike on Iran.
But just as America appeared on the verge of war with Iran, President Trump’s flair for the dramatic popped up.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that President Trump was giving a two-week timetable for real negotiations, which he believes could succeed, for Iran to agree to a diplomatic solution to end its nuclear program and avert another disastrous war in the Middle East.
“Based on the fact that there is a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks,” the statement from Trump read.
