President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will withdraw Ed Martin’s nomination for U.S. Attorney for Washington D.C.
The decision comes after Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) declared he would not support Martin’s confirmation, creating an unexpected roadblock for the administration’s justice department appointments.
Trump revealed he already has a replacement nominee in mind when speaking to Daily Caller White House Correspondent Reagan Reese.
The president indicated that Martin might still receive a different position within the Department of Justice, suggesting this setback may be temporary for Martin’s federal service aspirations.
Sen. Tillis explained his opposition to reporters on Tuesday, citing fundamental disagreements with Martin regarding the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots as his primary concern.
The location of the potential appointment proved crucial to Tillis’s decision-making process.
“If Mr. Martin were being put forth as a U.S. Attorney for any district except the district where January 6 happened, the protest happened, I’d probably support him. But not in this district,” Tillis stated to the press.
The senator took a firm stance on the Capitol breach, asserting that anyone who illegally entered the Capitol grounds should have faced imprisonment.
Tillis specifically mentioned his belief that approximately 200-300 individuals pardoned by Trump for their actions on January 6 did not deserve clemency, revealing a sharp divide within Republican ranks on this sensitive issue.
“We have to be very clear that what happened on January the 6th was wrong. It was not prompted or created by other people to put those people in trouble. They made a stupid decision and they disgraced the United States by absolutely destroying the Capitol and I can’t have any patience for it,” Tillis declared, leaving no room for compromise on his position.
Despite the setback, President Trump praised Martin’s performance during his time serving as acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
“He’s done a very good job, crime is down 25 percent in D.C. during his period of time,” Trump highlighted, emphasizing tangible results achieved under Martin’s leadership.
Trump expressed his frustration with the situation, noting the many competing priorities facing his administration in the early months of his term.
“I’m very disappointed in that but I have so many different things that I’m doing now with the trade, you know I’m one person I can only make, boom, I can only lift that little phone so many times in a day,” the president remarked, alluding to the limits of executive attention even for priority appointments.
The president repeatedly communicated his disappointment with the turn of events throughout his conversation with the Daily Caller correspondent.
“To me it was disappointing I’ll be honest. I have to be straight, I was disappointed, a lot of people were disappointed, but that’s the way it works sometimes,” Trump remarked, showing rare public acknowledgment of an administrative setback.
The White House plans to announce Martin’s replacement within the next two days, According to the president.
Trump remained complimentary of Martin despite withdrawing his nomination, suggesting a continued relationship.
“We have somebody else that will be great. I just want to say Ed is unbelievable and hopefully we can bring him into, whether it’s DOJ or whatever, in some capacity because he’s really outstanding,” the president stated, leaving the door open for Martin’s future service.
In his comments to Reese, Trump reiterated his disappointment while alluding to the lack of support that ultimately derailed the nomination process.
“He’s a terrific person but he wasn’t getting the support from people that I thought,” Trump said, hinting at possible miscalculations regarding congressional backing for the nominee.
