A horrifying encounter in Indiana has led to serious criminal charges for a man accused of orchestrating a car crash in an alleged attempt to kidnap and rape a woman with her baby in the car.
Jason M. Middleton, of Hancock County, is facing multiple felony charges including attempted rape, attempted armed kidnapping, and criminal confinement with a deadly weapon. The shocking incident happened on April 28 near the intersection of U.S. 52 and County Road 100 West.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Middleton rear-ended the woman’s car as she waited at a stoplight with her infant in the backseat. Once both drivers exited their vehicles, Middleton allegedly tried to pin the crash on the victim.
“What the f— did I do?” he allegedly screamed.
“You just hit me twice, and I have a baby in the car,” the woman shot back.
While the woman returned to her car to call the police and collect insurance details, things took a terrifying turn. Middleton allegedly pulled a gun and demanded she get into his van, threatening to kill her and her child if she didn’t comply.
As she resisted and struggled for the weapon, Middleton allegedly grabbed the back of her neck and told her to “shut the f— up,” warning he was “going to make her get in the van,” according to police reports.
Fortunately, a witness saw the confrontation and heard the victim scream, “My baby!” prompting several motorists to stop and help. Middleton fled the scene in his van—but not before the victim memorized his license plate number.
Police quickly tracked him down in a neighboring county, where he was reportedly found hiding inside a storage container. No weapon was recovered, and Middleton later claimed the woman had actually pulled a gun on him, saying he ran off because “she was gonna shoot me.”
Middleton is currently being held at the Morgan County Jail on a $500,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 21.
