Today, India delivered justice for the brutal murder of American-Jewish journalist Daniel Pearl by targeting the very heart of the terror infrastructure in Pakistan. Asra Nomani, a former Wall Street Journal journalist and close friend of Pearl, revealed how her colleague was betrayed by both the Pakistani government and terrorists after he reported on terror camps in Bahawalpur. Pearl, known for his fearless journalism, was executed by Islamic militants after uncovering the existence of terror networks that Pakistan’s leadership had promised to dismantle.
For decades, the West has tolerated Pakistan’s export of terrorism, sacrificing countless innocent lives in the process. India, however, has finally done what needed to be done, directly confronting the terror infrastructure that breeds jihad. Operation Sindoor, a precision strike on nine terror sites in Pakistan and PoJK, including the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) headquarters in Bahawalpur, has sent a resounding message to Islamic jihadis: terrorism will not be tolerated.
Nomani recalls that Daniel Pearl had traveled to Bahawalpur after General Pervez Musharraf vowed to crack down on terrorist groups following the attack on India’s parliament. Pearl was determined to report the truth, venturing into the heart of Pakistan’s militant stronghold, where he discovered that terror camps were still operational despite the promises made by the Pakistani government. According to Nomani, Pearl’s death was not an isolated tragedy but a direct consequence of Pakistan’s failure to dismantle these terror networks.
“Bahawalpur.”
I still have chills in my heart from when I first heard that town’s name in late January 2002. For the 23 years since, I have reported on how Pakistani intelligence and military leaders have used that city — Bahawalpur — in the southern province of Punjab as a base… pic.twitter.com/nFF6geUTp7

Operation Sindoor struck at JeM’s central hub, Markaz Subhan Allah in Bahawalpur, a facility linked to terror training, indoctrination, and planning deadly attacks like the 2019 Pulwama bombing. During the raid, several high-ranking members of JeM, including the family of JeM Chief Maulana Masood Azhar, were killed. For Nomani, this strike is deeply personal, as it represents a long-awaited justice for her friend who exposed the terror underbelly of Bahawalpur.
Nomani also recounted how Pearl had been set up by Omar Sheikh, a radicalized British-Pakistani militant who had previously been jailed in India for kidnapping Western tourists. Sheikh, along with JeM founder Masood Azhar, had been released during the Indian Airlines Flight 814 hostage crisis. After returning to Pakistan, Sheikh remained protected by the state, rather than being prosecuted. This act of complicity by Pakistan’s leadership has long fueled international outrage.
In 2020, despite being convicted, Sheikh’s sentence was shockingly reduced, and he was placed in a government safe house. Such leniency only underlined Pakistan’s willingness to harbor terrorists rather than deliver justice. Operation Sindoor, however, marks a turning point, one that should serve as a global example of how to combat Islamic terror without compromise.
Nomani expressed gratitude for India’s decisive action, highlighting that it was a strategic attack on terror bases that Pakistan’s own military failed to dismantle. She stated, ‘Pakistan’s obsession with controlling Kashmir has blinded it to the cancer of terrorism within its own borders.’
As RAIR Foundation editor, Amy Mek reported on X when the news broke early this morning. “To India, we say THANK YOU for standing strong against Islamic terror and taking the fight directly to the jihadis. The West must learn from India’s stance that Islamic jihad has no place in a civilized world, and anyone who shelters these monsters must face the consequences.”

Daniel Pearl’s legacy as a brave journalist who sought the truth lives on, and India’s actions in Operation Sindoor serve as a powerful reminder that justice can prevail, even in the face of state-sponsored terror.
Asra Nomani powerfully stated, ‘I still have chills in my heart from when I first heard that town’s name in late January 2002. For the 23 years since, I have reported on how Pakistani intelligence and military leaders have used that city — Bahawalpur — in the southern province of Punjab as a base for its homegrown domestic terrorists.’
