The Biden effect is in full swing right now.
We are seeing an unprecedented number of fossils in Congress step down and not run for re-election.
The latest in the group is Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), 80, who has been serving in the House for 26 years.
She’s out
We continue to see the impact of former President Joe Biden losing the 2024 election on members of Congress who are up there in years themselves.
Politics is a young man’s game, but we have far too many members in the House and Senate who are 70 or older and still running for office.
Now, if you are doing this job right, you are spending four days a week in D.C. to legislate, then the other three days in your district office speaking to your constituents, attending local events, etc.
In other words, to do this job, you need to be able to go full bore about 340 days a year, if not more, and that does not even take into consideration what you need to do when it comes time to run your re-election campaign.
How many members of Congress do you think are really doing that, let alone members over the age of 70?
Well, there is now one fewer politician in that bracket, with the Illinois Democrat announcing, “For the last 26 years, I have had the distinct honor and privilege of representing the 9th Congressional District of Illinois, my lifelong home and the best district in the nation.”
She went on, “Today, it is with profound gratitude and the utmost appreciation for my constituents that I announce my decision not to seek reelection at the end of my current term.”
Schakowsky added, “I am incredibly proud of the things I have been able to accomplish during my time in Congress.
The lawmaker further noted, “I was honored to help draft and pass the Affordable Care Act, ensuring that Americans could no longer be denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions and providing quality health coverage for millions.”
The early front runner in the race to replace her is probably Kat Abughazaleh, 26, who will be welcomed with open arms by the progressive Squad.
I love the idea of new blood, but I really wish we could get some moderates in office who would be willing to work across the aisle rather than waging war and fearmongering the American people.
Sadly, looking at Abughazaleh’s social media profiles, the latter is what we are about to get.
