Vice President JD Vance made waves online Monday after defending the much-debated “Star Wars” prequels in a controversial post.
His remarks quickly became the focal point of a heated debate, especially among conservative voices, as Vance’s support for George Lucas’s films raised eyebrows — and tempers — across social media.
Vance’s comment came in response to MAGA commentator Jack Posobiec, who posted a critical take on both the prequel and sequel trilogies.
“The prequels suck because they were poorly made by George Lucas who only had a small role in the original series,” Posobiec wrote. “The sequels suck because they are abominations made by Disney committees and JJ Abrams simps.”
While Posobiec wasn’t shy in his harsh criticism, Vance took a completely different stance.
“The prequels were underrated,” he stated simply, sparking a firestorm of reactions from fans and political commentators alike.
Some were quick to express disbelief, suggesting that this opinion could harm Vance’s potential political future.
“Is that what you will say when you are running for president in 2028?” Ed Krassenstein asked, hinting that the take could alienate voters in the long run.
Others, including author Jon Del Arroz, didn’t hold back in expressing their disdain.
“JD NO DELETE THIS, L TAKE,” he wrote, seemingly calling for Vance to retract his comment.
Not everyone agreed with the backlash. Supporters of Vance’s take started chiming in, defending the prequels and elevating Vance’s position.
“Based take by the future President of the US!” wrote Hank Rearden. “Episode 3 is better than anything Disney has made by a long shot. It’s right up there with the originals,” he added.
Author Joshua Lisec offered his own take, stating, “The Star Wars Prequels are on the same level as the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and I’m tired of pretending they’re not.” This sparked further discussion, with Vance’s opinion gaining traction among some groups.
Several others pointed out that the sequels had only made the prequels appear better in retrospect.
“Prequels aged like wine thanks to the sequels,” said Shawn Farash.
The controversy surrounding Vance’s remarks comes on the heels of “Star Wars Day,” celebrated annually on May 4. The day saw a flurry of activity across social media, much of it centered around pop culture references and memes.
This year, however, the White House joined the conversation in a more politically charged way, posting an AI-generated image of President Trump wielding an orange lightsaber — a nod to the “Star Wars” universe, the Daily Mail reports.
The image itself became a topic of contention, with many critics claiming that the lightsaber appeared red, thus associating Trump with the Sith, the evil faction in “Star Wars.”
“If Trump carries a red lightsaber, that means he’s part of the Sith and is evil. Fitting!” remarked Democratic influencer Harry Sisson.
The White House, however, used the moment to launch a political jab.
“Happy May the 4th to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics who are fighting so hard to bring Sith Lords, Murderers, Drug Lords, Dangerous Prisoners, & well known MS-13 Gang Members back into our Galaxy,” the account wrote. “You’re not the Rebellion—you’re the Empire. May the 4th be with you.”
This was a classic example of political rhetoric disguised as playful holiday content, the Daily Mail notes. For Vance, his Star Wars post added fuel to an already heated conversation, expanding the debate beyond the movies themselves.
The heated back-and-forth between fans, critics and political figures like Vance shows just how much cultural opinions have become intertwined with political identity.
As Vance prepares for a potential presidential run in 2028, his Star Wars take may just be a glimpse of the kind of controversies that will accompany his path forward.
