Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, elected as a Democrat, has decided to leave the party and come over to the dark side with us.
In all honesty, Villanueva has been teetering on the edge for quite some time, including when he was serving as sheriff.
He pushed back against some COVID-era rules in what was a warning that he was no longer happy with his party and the direction it was taking.
Pushing back
Villanueva was elected in 2018 as the sheriff for L.A. County, but he lost his re-election campaign to Robert Luman in 2022, who is the former police chief of Long Beach.
While he was in office, Villanueva pushed back against the Black Lives Matter movement, showing that he was starting to lean a bit more right.
During the pandemic, his lean toward conservatism really started to show up, as he refused to close beaches over July 4 weekend, and he also stated that he would not enforce a mask mandate in his county.
His reasoning for the latter was twofold: the mandate was not based on science, and he did not want to use his limited resources to go after people for not wearing masks.
At the time, he wrote, “Forcing the vaccinated and those who already contracted COVID-19 to wear masks indoors is not backed by science and contradicts the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.”
The local GOP is very happy to have him aboard.
After Villanueva made his announcement, the California Republican Party wrote, “Chairwoman @corrinrankin and the entire @CAGOP welcome you to the Republican Party, @AlexVilanueva33!”
The GOP continued, “Californians are realizing that the @CA_Dem left them and sanity behind. You’re not alone. Choosing law and order, freedom, and common sense is the right move!”
Republican State Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil also responded, writing, “Welcome to the right side!”
She added, “Who will be next? I left the Democratic party because they have lost touch with the every day American.”
Alvarado-Gil continued, “So many promises broken and enough pandering to Hispanic Californians. Be done and register Republican.”
This is something we are starting to see more and more of as the Democrat Party continues its massive lurch to the left, defending illegal immigrants and criminals rather than looking out for the interests of hard-working Americans.
Democrat leadership is not getting the memo that the majority of Americans support the conservative agenda these days, which is being made even clearer by the fact that even though Trump is off to a bit of a rough start, 94% of the people who voted for him would still not change their vote.
That should tell you all you need to know about how Americans feel about the Democrats’ agenda today.
