Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred revealed that he has been talking to President Donald Trump about baseball great Pete Rose.
Trump vowed to issue a posthumous pardon to Rose, who was barred from the league after it was discovered that he was betting on baseball games. In a Truth Social post about his decision, he also slammed the MLB for failing to elevate Rose to the Hall of Fame, immortalizing “Charlie Hustle’s” legacy forever.
But Manfred recently revealed that he had been discussing the 17-time All-Star with Trump at a meeting several weeks ago, and will officially issue a decision on the permanent ban at some point in the future.
“Speaking Monday at a meeting of the Associated Press Sports Editors, Manfred said he and Trump have discussed several issues, including Manfred’s concerns over how Trump’s immigration policies could impact players from Cuba, Venezuela and other foreign countries,” Daily Mail reported. “Manfred is considering a petition to have Rose posthumously removed from MLB’s permanently ineligible list. The petition was filed in January by Jeffrey Lenkov, a Southern California lawyer who represented Rose prior to the 17-time All-Star’s death at age 83.”
“I met with President Trump two weeks ago, I guess now, and one of the topics was Pete Rose, but I’m not going beyond that,” Manfred said, refusing to give out any extra details. “He’s said what he said publicly, I’m not going beyond that in terms of what the back and forth was.”
The president made his position clear in the post, calling for baseball to “get off its fat, lazy a**” and put Rose into the Hall of Fame.
“Major League Baseball didn’t have the courage or decency to put the late, great, Pete Rose, also known as “Charlie Hustle,” into the Baseball Hall of fame. Now he is dead, will never experience the thrill of being selected, even though he was a FAR BETTER PLAYER than most of those who made it, and can only be named posthumously. WHAT A SHAME! Anyway, over the next few weeks I will be signing a complete PARDON of Pete Rose, who shouldn’t have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on HIS TEAM WINNING. He never betted against himself, or the other team. He had the most hits, by far, in baseball history, and won more games than anyone in sports history. Baseball, which is dying all over the place, should get off its fat, lazy ass, and elect Pete Rose, even though far too late, into the Baseball Hall of Fame!” he wrote in late February.
