President Donald Trump is accusing Amazon of launching a partisan assault on U.S. trade policy.
The company announced it will begin displaying the cost of tariffs directly on product listings—a move that the White House says is intended to sway public opinion against American manufacturing efforts.
The announcement first surfaced in a report by Punchbowl News, which said Amazon would add tariff cost information next to product prices on its site, the Daily Mail reports.
The retailer’s decision comes as the Trump administration continues to tighten restrictions on Chinese imports through expanded tariffs.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the decision “a hostile and political act,” telling reporters she had just spoken to the president about the development.
“This is a hostile and political act by Amazon,” Leavitt stated, adding that the administration sees the move as an intentional effort to undermine the president’s economic agenda.
Leavitt went further, accusing Amazon of bias and inconsistency.
“Why didn’t Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?” she asked.
Amazon’s action has also reignited concerns over its relationship with China.
Leavitt referenced a December 2021 report from Reuters, which detailed how Amazon worked with a Chinese government propaganda office to set up a special book-selling portal.
As part of the arrangement, Amazon disabled reviews and star ratings for sensitive Chinese publications receiving poor feedback.
Jay Carney, Amazon’s then-lobbying chief and a former Obama White House press secretary, played a key role in that operation, according to the report.
Carney reportedly traveled to Beijing and assisted in developing internal documents that helped Amazon align with the demands of Chinese officials.
The Trump administration has framed its tariff policy as a tool to revive American industry and reduce dependence on China.
Trump’s updated trade policies include new tariffs on Chinese imports and the elimination of a loophole that previously allowed foreign sellers to ship goods valued under $800 into the U.S. without paying duties, as previously reported by Resist the Mainstream.
This change directly impacts Chinese-based platforms like Shein and Temu, whose popularity has surged due to low-cost, duty-free shipments.
Despite White House confidence in the long-term strategy, outside researchers have warned that American households may feel a financial pinch.
A study from Yale University’s Budget Lab estimated that retaliatory trade measures could result in added costs of up to $4,400 per year for the average U.S. household, according to the Daily Mail.
Still, the administration maintains that restoring domestic manufacturing and pressuring China to engage in fairer trade practices are necessary steps.
Officials continue to call on Beijing to negotiate while defending the tariffs as a means of protecting American jobs.
As the debate intensifies, Amazon’s decision to spotlight tariff costs has added new tension between corporate interests and national economic policy.
The White House’s forceful response suggests that major companies may face increasing scrutiny as trade enforcement expands under Trump’s leadership.
