Is there anything more embarrassing than the Homeland Security secretary having her purse snatched in a restaurant?
The good news is that Kristi Noem’s alleged thief has been caught.
Even better for the Trump administration is that the man responsible was reportedly an illegal immigrant.
Got him
Noem was at a D.C. restaurant over Easter weekend when her designer purse was snatched.
According to the reports, she had her passport, DHS ID, and $3,000 in cash, among other items, in the purse at the time it was taken.
Noem stated that she should have been more alert, as she thought it was one of her grandkids kicking her feet when the thief allegedly stole the purse.
I would ask what Noem’s security team was doing, allowing someone to get that close to the DHS secretary in a public place.
The good news about the theft was that surveillance cameras got a pretty good shot of the alleged thief, and Metro Police were able to track him down and take him into custody on Saturday.
Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Ed Martin made reference to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, which means the alleged thief is likely an illegal immigrant.
Martin did add that Noem was not being targeted because she is the head of DHS, but only because she had a very nice-looking purse that caught the man’s attention.
He added, “President Trump’s direction to us is we charge these folks that are here illegally, and we prosecute them as well as deport them when need be, you know, as soon as that can happen.”
When Noem was asked about the theft, she stated that it was “very professionally done.”
The robbery took place at a restaurant called Capitol Burger, where Noem was treating her family to a holiday meal, which is why she said she had so much cash on her at the time (she wanted to pay for the meal as well as give the kids gifts afterward).
This man was reportedly part of a theft ring that has been working the area, as NBC Chicago reported, “Three days before Noem’s handbag was stolen, another woman dining with her own family at a nearby eatery had her purse taken in a similar manner, records show.
NBC News reportedly “discovered the similarities in the two incidents after requesting reports of thefts in the neighborhood from the DC Metropolitan Police Department.”
I have to ask again… what was the Secret Service doing to allow a masked man to get this close to the secretary of Homeland Security? The incident is yet another epic fail for the agency.
