In a jaw-dropping start to the 2025 NFL Draft at Lambeau Field Thursday night, Green Bay Packers legend Clay Matthews hijacked the opening ceremony with an unexpected political reference.
The move sent the crowd into a frenzy and momentarily derailed the NFL’s premier offseason event.
Matthews, joining NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and rapper Lil Wayne on stage, claimed to have received a special message directly from President Donald Trump before launching a savage attack on the Packers’ historic rivals that electrified the hometown crowd.
“I just got off the phone with the President,” Matthews announced to thunderous cheers from the Green Bay faithful. “He told me to pass a message along to all 32 NFL franchises.”
The 38-year-old former linebacker then dramatically pulled a piece of paper from his pocket and continued, “Let me tell you what it reads. It says, ‘My fellow Americans, the Bears still suck!’”
The hometown crowd erupted as Matthews delivered the four-word dig at Chicago, reveling in the continuation of one of the NFL’s oldest and most bitter rivalries, dating back to when the league first adopted its conference structure in 1933.
The ceremony began with Goodell making a theatrical entrance on a bicycle, followed by former Packers stars Matthews, Jordy Nelson, Mason Crosby, Ahman Green, James Jones and Green Bay superfan Lil Wayne.
This marked the first time the draft has been held next to historic Lambeau Field, bringing the league’s biggest offseason event to the NFL’s smallest market as thousands of fans traveled to “Titletown” for the festivities.
After introducing the group, Goodell handed the microphone to Matthews – a decision he likely regretted moments later when the six-time Pro Bowler announced he was “about to go off script” before delivering his crowd-pleasing but unauthorized presidential “message.”
Matthews, who was the 26th overall pick by Green Bay in 2009 and recorded 83.5 sacks during his Packers career, clearly relished his moment in the spotlight, creating an instant viral moment that will be remembered long after the actual draft picks are announced.
Following the unexpected opening, Goodell managed to regain control of the proceedings, allowing the Tennessee Titans to make the first overall selection.
The Titans chose University of Miami quarterback Cam Ward, addressing their desperate need for a signal-caller and delighting fans back in Nashville who had been anxiously awaiting their team’s selection.
The draft drama continued almost immediately after Ward’s selection when a blockbuster trade saw the Jacksonville Jaguars make an aggressive move up to secure the second overall pick.
The Jaguars received the second overall pick along with fourth-round (No. 104) and sixth-round (No. 200) selections. In exchange, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Jacksonville sent the fifth overall pick, a 2026 first-rounder, this year’s 36th pick, and a fourth-round selection (No. 126) to Cleveland.
Despite his well-documented love of football, President Trump was not in attendance at Lambeau Field for the draft.
Trump made history in February when he became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl, appearing at the Caesars Superdome where he mingled with New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson and Commissioner Goodell during Philadelphia’s victory over Kansas City.
He had previously attended a Pittsburgh Steelers game following a campaign rally in Pennsylvania during the leadup to last November’s election.
The President is scheduled to host the Philadelphia Eagles at the White House next week to celebrate their Super Bowl LIX triumph – a commanding 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the visit will take place on April 28, marking the team’s first celebration with Trump.
After their February victory, speculation had swirled about whether the team would accept the traditional White House invitation, but reports indicate the Eagles will be “honored” to make the visit.
The president has also announced plans to welcome the Chiefs to the White House this summer, honoring their Super Bowl victory from five years ago that was never celebrated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
