The attack represents a significant escalation in violence against civilians in Kashmir, which has been plagued by separatist violence for decades. Officials describe it as “the largest directed at civilians in recent years,” highlighting the severity of this latest terrorist incident.
“We will come down heavily on the perpetrators with the harshest consequences,” Indian Home Minister Amit Shah said in response to the attack.

Kashmir remains a flashpoint between nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan, with both nations claiming the territory in its entirety.
