MIAMI, FL – The Miami community is rallying around a young basketball star who has been left paralyzed following a shooting earlier this week. Nehemiah Johnson, a standout player at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High, was preparing for a future with the Marine Corps before his life took a tragic turn.
Outside Jackson Memorial Hospital, where Johnson is currently recovering, his family spoke about their journey and the strength they find in their faith. “He’s a very selfless and humble young man,” his mother said, her voice filled with pride. “He was getting ready to serve our country.”
On Monday night, Johnson was shot in what family members believe to be a case of mistaken identity. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the West Little River neighborhood of Miami-Dade County. His family is now seeking justice as detectives work to find the shooter.
The young athlete remains in stable condition but is grappling with the reality of his prognosis. “He keeps asking, ‘Why me, mommy?’” his mother shared. Doctors have informed the family that Johnson is likely to be paralyzed for life. “We do believe in miracles,” she added, holding onto hope.
The Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the case, urging anyone with information or video footage to come forward. “We need justice for my baby,” his mother pleaded, emphasizing the need for community support in finding those responsible.
Meanwhile, the family has launched an online fundraiser to cover the medical costs that are expected to accumulate as Johnson begins his long recovery journey. The community has shown an outpouring of support, and the family is grateful for any assistance they receive.
“I’m heartbroken but grateful he’s still alive,” a family member said, expressing mixed emotions. “Nehemiah is a great child who didn’t deserve this.”
As the investigation continues, the family remains hopeful that the person responsible will be brought to justice. The Miami community stands with them, united in their call for accountability and healing.
