A family celebration turned deadly in Brazil after two children died and their mother was hospitalized from eating a poisoned Easter egg left anonymously on their doorstep.
Luis Fernando Rocha Silva, 7, was the first to succumb after sharing the chocolate egg with his 13-year-old sister, Evelyn Fernanda, and their mother, Miriam Lira, 36. The family had received the treat in a plastic tray with a handwritten note: “With love, to Miriam Lira. Happy Easter!!”
The tragedy unfolded in the city of Imperatriz. Luis was found unresponsive shortly after eating the egg. His father, Rafael, attempted CPR, but the boy went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead early Thursday morning.
Evelyn was rushed to Imperatriz Municipal Hospital and placed in intensive care, where doctors fought for days to save her. On Monday, she died from vascular shock and multiple organ failure. Miriam, the children’s mother, remains hospitalized but is now in stable condition.
Police launched an immediate investigation that took a disturbing turn when Rafael’s ex-wife, Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, 36, was arrested. According to officials, Pereira admitted to purchasing the chocolate but denied any involvement in poisoning it. Surveillance footage from a local chocolate shop shows her wearing sunglasses and a black wig as she buys the eggs, apparently trying to disguise herself.
Investigators believe the motive was fueled by jealousy and revenge. According to Maranhão’s Security Secretary Maurício Martins, “The evidence suggests the crime was driven by jealousy, as the suspect’s ex-husband is now the partner of the poisoned woman.”
After delivering the egg, an anonymous caller contacted Miriam to ask if she had received the package, adding another layer of premeditation to the case.
The deaths of Evelyn and Luis have rocked the local community and drawn national attention. Miriam, still recovering in hospital, has not yet publicly commented. Meanwhile, prosecutors are working to build a case against Pereira as they await toxicology results and forensic analysis of the chocolate.
