A Filipino baker is behind bars after allegedly murdering seven of his coworkers in their sleep—just hours after celebrating his own birthday.
The gruesome killings unfolded in the early morning of April 22 at the J&B Malunggay Bakery in Antipolo City, Philippines. According to local authorities, 32-year-old suspect Bogart Ramirez reportedly drugged his coworkers with alcohol during a birthday party, then picked them off one by one with a knife as they slept off the booze.
“He said he overheard them plotting to kill him in his sleep with a pillow,” reported the Associated Press. “He claimed they wanted it to look like he died of a nightmare so his wife wouldn’t suspect anything.”
Police were tipped off when a nearby neighbor heard screams coming from the bakery. When they arrived, they found seven lifeless men, all stabbed to death. The victims, ages ranging from teens to early 20s, were said to be employees and relatives of the bakery’s co-owner—Ramirez’s business partner.
Ramirez turned himself in to police shortly after the attack. “I surrendered because I had nowhere to go,” he reportedly told investigators. “If I leave town, they’ll catch me anyway.”
Authorities say the motive is still under investigation, but tensions had apparently been simmering for some time. Ramirez claimed that his coworkers, who were related to his business partner, were trying to push him out and seize control of the bakery. “They were ganging up on me. If I died, everything would be his,” he allegedly told police.
Police are also investigating whether the liquor served at the birthday party was spiked with sedatives. Samples have been sent to a lab for analysis.
Colonel Felipe Maraggun, Rizal police director, cast doubt on Ramirez’s lone-wolf account. “We’re not convinced he acted alone. There’s a possibility he had help,” Maraggun said, adding that other suspects are being considered.
The Philippine National Police and Rizal authorities have yet to release additional statements, but locals are reeling from the horrific crime in what was once a quiet neighborhood.
