OAKLAND, CA – A quiet afternoon in East Oakland was shattered by gunfire on Friday, as police rushed to the scene near two local schools following reports of a shooting. Officers discovered a deceased man inside a white Kia Sorento on Fontaine Street, close to Keller Avenue, around 12:45 p.m. The victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident, which occurred near the Grove Learning and Bay Area Technology School, left parents anxious as they arrived to collect their children. Though police assured that no students were involved, the proximity of the crime to the schools heightened concerns among families.
In response to the shooting, homicide investigators, alongside the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau, joined patrol officers at the scene. Despite the heavy police presence, no arrests have been made, and authorities have yet to determine a motive for the crime.
The SUV was parked near the King Estates campus—a cluster of educational institutions that includes Bay Tech School and Rossdale High. Oak Grove Learning Montessori, located on the same block, also took precautions, releasing older students early and arranging for younger students to be picked up by parents at the crime scene tape.
This same area was the site of a 2022 gang-related shooting at Rossdale High, which injured six adults, including a school district carpenter who was later killed. The memory of that violent incident lingers in the community, amplifying the fear and urgency surrounding Friday’s shooting.
In an unrelated case, two men have been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in San Jose. Antonio Perez, 20, of San Jose, and Nathaniel Henderson, 19, of Union City, face charges after investigators used surveillance video and license plate readers to identify them. The February 12th shooting on Farm Drive near Hillsdale Avenue claimed the life of 19-year-old Juan Barrera.
Meanwhile, in Livermore, police have apprehended Amarante Smith, 26, of Oakley, in Seattle. He faces attempted murder charges for a road rage incident captured by Tesla cameras on March 11th. Authorities believe Smith fled to Seattle to evade capture and is now awaiting extradition to California.
Furthermore, police in Hercules are on the hunt for a suspect who robbed a man at gunpoint outside a Chase Bank on San Pablo Avenue. The assailant reportedly watched the victim withdraw cash before confronting him.
