A U.S. Space Force commander has been fired after she sent out a mass email in which she attempted to distance herself from President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance.Â
The commander, according to the New York Post, is Col. Susannah Meyers.
Meyers was the leader of the Pituffik Space Base, which is located in Greenland.
This incident began last month, after Vance made a visit to Greenland.
Here’s what happened:
President Trump, since taking office, has been pushing for the U.S. to acquire Greenland for various reasons, including for national security. To this end, Vance, last month, visited the country.
Vance specifically visited the Space Force base that Meyers was the commander of. There, Vance raised some of the Trump administration’s concerns about the area.
Fox News quotes Vance as saying:
Our message to Denmark is very simple. You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have underinvested in the people of Greenland, and you have underinvested in the security of this incredible, beautiful landmass.
Apparently, this was too much for Meyers. So, just after Vance left, she sent out a mass email attempting to distance herself from Vance’s remarks.
She, in part, wrote, “I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base.”
“Meyers . . . was removed from command’
Now, the Trump administration has decided to part ways with Meyers.
It was the Pentagon that relieved Meyers of her duties. It has released a public statement on the matter, saying:
Colonel Susannah Meyers, commander of Pituffik Space Base was removed from command by Colonel Kenneth Klock, commander of Space Base Delta 1, on April 10, 2025, for loss of confidence in her ability to lead. Commanders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, especially as it relates to remaining nonpartisan in the performance of their duties.
This comes less than a year after the Biden administration made Meyers the commander of the 821st Space Base Group. It was a short stint, but it was self-imposed.
Republicans have rallied behind the firing, arguing that it was the right decision considering that Meyers attempted to put politics ahead of her duties as a commander.
Going forward, the Pentagon has announced that Col. Shawn Lee will take over the position that Meyers had held.
