Joe Rogan, the outspoken and wildly popular podcast host, is once again under fire—this time for daring to speak out against the suffocating rules of politically correct culture.
On a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, he called the reemergence of the word “retarded” a cultural win, sending the left into another meltdown.
Rogan didn’t use the term lightly—he pointed out its reappearance in conversation, mostly thanks to long-form, uncensored media like podcasts.
Instead of backing down, he celebrated what he saw as a small pushback against enforced speech codes.
“The word is back,” he said, calling it “one of the great culture victories.”
Predictably, the outrage mob was quick to pounce.
Social media lit up with criticism, insisting Rogan was being “insensitive” and “harmful,” even though he was making a broader point about how certain words have been policed into extinction, as reported by the New York Post.
The term, which once had medical usage, has been scrubbed out of official vocabulary, replaced by “intellectual disability.”
That change came in 2013, when even medical journals surrendered to the sensitivities of the era.
A clip of Rogan’s comment went viral, especially after actress Maureen McCormick—best known for her role decades ago on The Brady Bunch—jumped into the debate.
She blasted Rogan, accusing him of dismissing people with disabilities and the emotional pain the word supposedly causes.
But not everyone saw it that way.
While some scolded Rogan for being “insensitive,” others understood the deeper cultural message.
They recognized his point wasn’t about mocking people with disabilities—it was about reclaiming freedom of speech from the progressive speech police.
Online, the debate raged.
Critics asked how the use of such a word could be considered a “victory,” while Rogan supporters argued that people use it colloquially, not to demean the disabled but to describe absurd or foolish behavior.
One user argued that reclaiming controversial words can “erase their harmful history,” while another pointed out the term is almost never used in reference to disabled individuals anymore.
Instead, it has become shorthand for extreme stupidity—a reflection of how language evolves.
Still, that didn’t stop detractors from claiming Rogan’s comment normalized hate.
One X user even begged, “Can we not use that word again?” But others said younger generations are bringing the word back into use, calling it a “cultural and generational” win.
Rogan has long positioned himself against the authoritarianism of woke culture.
He’s known for highlighting the dangers of silencing dissent, especially when it comes to speech, comedy, and masculinity.
In 2021, he went viral for saying that men were being silenced in the name of political correctness.
“Comedy is dying,” he warned. “You can’t make a good comedy movie anymore because everyone’s afraid of getting canceled.”
He argued that the fear of offending anyone has killed humor and free expression.
Eventually, Rogan said, it leads to a point where “straight white men are not allowed to talk.”
