Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was a budding Democrat star but may have tanked her own political career by appearing with President Donald J. Trump, an unforgivable sin in the eyes of many in her party.
Whitmer joined the president at the White House on Wednesday during a trip to Washington, D.C., standing near him in the Oval Office as he signed executive orders, an appearance that angered party loyalists who complained that she allowed herself to be used as a “prop” for Trump.
The governor was in the nation’s capital for what was to be a private meeting with Trump to discuss tariffs and other matters but ended up standing near the Resolute Desk as he spoke to reporters, getting a shout-out from the nation’s leader who praised her for doing an “excellent job” and being a “good person.”

“Just a f—ing disaster,” one unnamed Whitmer admirer and Democrat operative is quoted by NBC News. “It feels like it removes some of the momentum she had as a politically savvy swing-state Dem.”
The Democrat cheerleaders at CNN were aghast with Edward-Isaac Dovere huffing that the Oval Office appearance was a “huge embarrassment,” and host Audie Cornish also disapproved. “This does not look like the politics of resistance,” she said.
During the event, Trump signed off on a memorandum stripping former Homeland Security official Miles Taylor, aka “Anonymous,” of his security clearance and referring him to the Justice Department for investigation, suggesting the leaker may have committed treason.
Whitmer’s people said that she was caught by surprise to be invited into the Oval Office and that she was in no way endorsing Trump or his actions.
”The governor was surprised that she was brought into the Oval Office during President Trump’s press conference without any notice of the subject matter,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “Her presence is not an endorsement of the actions taken or statements made at that event.”
Making matters worse, Whitmer also expressed support for Trump on tariffs and fair trade, agreeing that it’s time to return manufacturing to America.
BREAKING: Gretchen Whitmer just announced she supports President Trump’s tariffs.
Whoa.
“I understand the motivation behind the tariffs…We do need to make more stuff in America…We do need fair trade!”

“I understand the motivation behind the tariffs, and I can tell you here’s where President Trump and I do agree,” the governor said. “We do need to make more stuff in America.”
“It is a massive indictment on Whitmer and her team’s judgment to, first, not have an answer on the tariff question and then go the White House and get absolutely played by Donald Trump to the point she is caught in the Oval Office as he signs one of his revenge and retribution executive orders and says 2020 was rigged,” NBC News quoted an unnamed national Democrat strategist.
The Wolverine State leader drew high praise from Democrats for the iron-fisted way that she ruled during the COVID era, one of the darkest periods in the nation’s history when Americans were given a taste of the sort of left-wing authoritarianism practiced in the old Soviet Union.
Her lockdowns and punishments of dissenters were among the cruelest in the nation, earning her a legion of admirers and predictions of a bright future as a potential White House candidate. Alas, playing nice with Trump may have burned it all to ashes.
In a wide open field for the 2028 Democrat nomination that includes such luminaries as Sen. Cory “Spartacus” Booker (D-NJ), AOC, morbidly obese Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris and ESPN motormouth Stephen A. Smith, Whitmer’s cozying up to Trump could be difficult if not impossible to overcome in a party that has no real vision or policies other than hating on him.
