In a move to enhance American daily life and promote personal freedoms, President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday targeting federal water pressure regulations. The order reverses the rules put in place during the Obama administration and continued under former President Joe Biden.
Trump believes that these regulations have hindered individual choice and stifled economic growth.
At the core of the executive order is the definition of “showerhead.” Trump has long criticized the Obama-era rules, which were later reinstated by Biden, for their overly complex regulations regarding this common household fixture.
“To the extent any definition is necessary for this common piece of hardware, the Oxford English Dictionary defines ‘showerhead’ in one short sentence,” Trump remarked in the executive order.
The executive order restores the water flow standard for showerheads to the 2.5-gallons-per-minute rate that has been in place since 1992. Trump argued that these previous standards had resulted in poor water pressure, making showers inefficient and frustrating for consumers.
“When it comes to my own experience,” Trump said during the signing, “I like to take a nice shower and take care of my beautiful hair.”
He also noted that current regulations force him to wait “15 minutes” for his shower to start.
“It comes out drip, drip, drip. It’s ridiculous,” he added, further highlighting his frustration with the slow water flow.
In addition to showerheads, the executive order also applies to other household appliances, including sinks and dishwashers. The White House issued a statement saying that Trump’s order would relieve Americans of unnecessary regulations that interfered with their ability to choose appliances.
“No market failure justifies this intrusion,” the statement said, adding that Americans should be free to choose their appliances without government intervention, according to the New York Post.
Trump’s team emphasized that Americans who pay for their own water usage should not be restricted by federal standards.
The new regulations come as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to reduce what it considers excessive government oversight in daily life. The White House has framed the changes as an attempt to simplify consumer choices by eliminating what it calls “red tape.”
“This order is restoring sanity to at least one small part of the federal regulations,” the statement continued, arguing that Americans should not have to contend with regulations that hinder the efficiency of basic household fixtures.
Critics of the previous regulations, enacted with the goal of promoting water conservation, have pointed out that the new order could lead to increased water usage, a concern Trump’s team has downplayed. Trump’s supporters argue that these previous regulations were an example of the government overstepping into personal choices and that it is important to allow consumers to make decisions based on their own preferences.
The order also seeks to undo restrictions on multi-nozzle showerheads, which the Obama-Biden regulations had made difficult to use in certain installations. According to the White House, this return to less restrictive standards will not only provide more control to consumers but will also allow the market to work freely without government interference.
