FBI Director Kash Patel can finally stop doing double duty.
Not long after Patel was sworn in as our new FBI director, President Donald Trump tapped him to be the acting director of the ATF as well.
According to reports this week, Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll has now been tapped to oversee the ATF, while keeping his duties in the aforementioned role.
Double duty
For some reason, Trump has not shied away from having staffers do double duty during this administration.
For instance, as stated above, Patel had been tasked with both the FBI and ATF duties.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio found himself tasked with taking over USAID, but he eventually farmed that out to someone else.
Now, Driscoll is doing double duty with the Army and the ATF, which seems like a lot for one person.
USA Today broke the initial report, stating, “Driscoll will continue to serve as Army Secretary while he also oversees the ATF, an arm of the U.S. Justice Department.”
Driscoll, 38, is deeply entrenched with this administration, having “served as an adviser to Vice President JD Vance, whom he met when both were attending Yale Law School.”
The Trump official will have his hands full with the ATF, which is why I am questioning why the president would want him doing double duty.
The ATF has been under serious fire dating back to the Biden administration for issuing new rules that were deemed overreach by 2A advocates.
Some of those rules were already reversed by Patel, but I doubt the desired actions are completed just yet.
As secretary of the Army, Driscoll also has a full plate in helping Secretary Pete Hegseth get spending under control, inventory issues, as well as ending all the DEI policies that were put in place under the previous administration.
I honestly cannot recall any administration having someone do double duty in these positions, and for good reason.
All of these director-level jobs are clearly full-time positions, so I cannot imagine how one person can possibly run two different agencies, let alone the Army and the ATF at the same time.
Hopefully, Trump will appoint a permanent head of the ATF soon, so Driscoll can take those duties off his plate and concentrate on getting the Army back in shape.
