Hakeem Jeffries Slammed for Claiming Democrats Want to ‘Secure the Border’

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) is under fire for claiming that Democrats want to “secure the border.”

While speaking to reporters on Thursday, Jeffries said that his fellow Democrats want to make the southern border “safe and strong.”

When a reporter asked if Jeffries and Democrats would commit to supporting additional funding for border security, the minority leader said, “We would need to look at the particulars.”

“We believe that we need to secure the border. Make sure that it is safe, and strong, that the rule of law consistent with America as a country of a nation of laws is fully and completely implemented at the border,” Jeffries said.

“We believe we have a broken immigration system and we need to fix it in a comprehensive and in a bipartisan way, and we also believe that we must always defend Dreamers, farm workers, and law-abiding immigrant families and protect them from aggressive overreach by the Trump administration,” he added.

Jeffries’ claim is interesting considering that while Democrats had a unified government in 2021, illegal border crossings soared.

The minority leader was slammed over his comments.

“His eyes make him look like he took a major drag from a water bong,” one user said on X.

“They’re trying to rebrand again. They’ll claim they were always for a strong border. It was Republicans who wanted illegal immigration and a porous border! Next it will be that it was always Republicans who wanted men in women’s sports,” another user wrote.

“That’s what we’re doing Temu Obama!” another user said.

In fiscal year 2021, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported nearly 2 million encounters with illegal immigrants at the border.

The year prior, close to 650,000 encounters were reported.

The following year, CBP unveiled a staggering 2.37 million encounters at the southern border.

In 2023, nearly 2.5 million encounters were reported, while in 2024, 2.1 million illegal immigrants were detained.

In fiscal year 2025, which runs from October 2024 to September 2025, just 369,000 encounters have been reported thus far.

As the Post Millennial pointed out, border crossings have taken a steep drop under President Donald Trump.

During a recent interview with sports analyst Stephen A. Smith, border czar Tom Homan revealed what led to the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” approach to illegal immigration.

Homan said that “31 percent of women that make that journey get raped by the criminal cartels. Children were dying on that border every day, dying either down in a river, dying making that journey. Children were sexually assaulted. The children were dying in the desert.” 

“You know, they made that journey. And lot of women and children not only died, many were sexually assaulted. So we said, ‘Look, how can we save lives? How can we stop the sexual assault of children.’ So we said, ‘Look, let’s prosecute them, because it’s a crime to enter this country illegally. So if we prosecute them and put them in jail, maybe the numbers go down, maybe less will come.’ And it worked,” he added.
