The House of Representatives delayed the vote to pass the Senate’s budget resolution on Wednesday as too many Republicans refused to vote for it, which would have sunk the resolution.
“We are working through some good ideas and solutions to get everybody there; it may not happen tonight but probably by tomorrow morning,” House Speaker Johnson said Wednesday, according to The Hill. “This is part of the process, this is a very constructive process, I’m very optimistic about the outcome of this one big, beautiful bill, and this is just one of the steps in getting there.”
The budget resolution is critical to advancing President Trump’s legislative agenda on the southern border, tax cuts and energy policy, as it allows Republicans to avoid a Senate filibuster by Democrats.
If the House doesn’t pass the Senate budget resolution as is, then Republicans will have to decide whether to make changes and send it back to the upper chamber or have GOP leaders from both chambers come to an agreement in a conference meeting.
Johnson said that a “small subset” of Republicans were not satisfied with the resolution.
“So we’re going to talk about maybe going to conference with the Senate or adding an amendment, but we’re going to make that decision. We are going to continue to move forward,” he said.
