President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ), led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, approved the restoration of legendary actor Mel Gibson’s gun rights last week.
In 2011, Gibson lost his gun rights as part of a plea agreement in a misdemeanor domestic violence case, per Trending Politics.
Bondi’s decision to restore the iconic actor’s gun rights came after DOJ pardon attorney Elizabeth Oyer claimed she was fired for opposing the move.
The New York Times reported that Bondi assembled a group to come up with a name of 95 individuals who have been convicted in cases relating to gun rights.
Gibson’s name was reportedly not included in the list.
Upon submitting the list, Oyer claimed that the group received a response from the deputy attorney general’s office asking them to include Gibson.
Oyer ultimately refused, according to Trending Politics.
Since then, Oyer has claimed that her decision to not include the actor’s name led to her termination, however, the Trump administration has denied as such.
Oyer claimed that allowing Gibson to own a weapon “is not something that I could recommend lightly.”
“There are real consequences that flow from people who have a history of domestic violence being in possession of firearms,” Oyer told the Times. “This isn’t political — this is a safety issue.”
The DOJ’s decision comes after Trump appointed Gibson to serve as a special ambassador to Hollywood alongside fellow legendary actors Sylvester Stallone and Jon Voight.
“It is my honor to announce Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone to be Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California,” Trump said on Truth Social in January. “They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!”
Mel Gibson said he was surprised by Trump’s nomination.
“I got the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised. Nevertheless, I heed the call,” Gibson told Variety at the time. “My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can,” he added, before jokingly asking, “Any chance the position comes with an Ambassador’s residence?”
Gibson notably endorsed Trump in the 2024 election, slamming former Vice President Kamala Harris for having the “the IQ of a fence post.”
“I don’t think it’s going to surprise anyone who I vote for,” Gibson told a cameraman in October 2024, according to Variety.
“I’m gonna guess Trump. Is that a bad guess?” the cameraman asked.
“I think that’s a pretty good guess,” Gibson replied. “I know what it’ll be like if we let her in. And that ain’t good. Miserable track record. No policies to speak of. She’s got the IQ of a fence post.”
Stallone, known for his roles in films such as “Rambo” and “Rocky” has also been an outspoken supporter of the president.
During an event at Mar-a-Lago following Trump’s decisive election victory in 2024, Stallone compared the president to George Washington.
“Without him, you can imagine what the world would look like?” the legendary actor said.
