Big RV fees to pay for mass-RV abandonment

The House had a hearing this week on House Bill 3209 which would charge RVs a $25 increased annual fee and a $40 trip fee (trip fee = when a drivers need a temporary license for an unregistered or in-process-of-being registered vehicle).  These cost would be used to fund a disposal program for abandoned recreational vehicles.  People bailing on their RV is a problem in many states because it can cost $1,500 to tow and super-expensive to repair, leaving many people tempted to abandon the vehicle.  Many failing RVs that are not legal to drive are too often sold to homeless for dirt cheap prices.   Since Oregon has one of the nation’s biggest homeless populations, it has now meant that Oregon has a massive RV abandonment problems.  This is just another problem made worse by Oregon’s liberal homeless-encouraging policies.

And simple RV drivers are now paying a steep price.

One news headline showed how exploding RVs are now a trend in Oregon.

House Bill 3209 summary, “imposes a surcharge on recreational vehicle registration fees of $25 per year, as well as a vehicle disposal fee surcharge of $40 on recreational vehicle trip permits. It transfers revenues from these fees to an Abandoned Recreational Vehicle Account, and authorizes the Department of Transportation to provide reimbursement for the cost of towing and/or disposing of abandoned recreational vehicles. The measure directs the Department to adjust the fees biennially for inflation, and sunsets the program on January 2, 2036.”
