Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) sparked controversy on the Senate floor by referring to independent journalist Laura Loomer as an “internet troll” following the dismissal of key National Security Council (NSC) officials by President Donald Trump. The firings, which included NSC Director General Timothy Haugh and civilian Deputy Director Wendy Noble, came shortly after Trump’s meeting with Loomer, prompting Schiff to warn that the personnel changes jeopardize U.S. national security.
In his remarks, Schiff criticized the president’s actions, suggesting a connection between the terminations and Trump’s interactions with Laura Loomer. Schiff went on to state that President Trump’s actions put America’s national security at risk.
Schiff’s comments have drawn scrutiny due to his own history of working with unelected national security bureaucrats promoting claims of Russian interference in U.S. elections, particularly during Trump’s first term. Critics point to Schiff’s role, then as a congressman, in advancing the narrative of “Trump-Russia collusion,” which they argue relied heavily on unverified allegations. In 2019, Schiff publicized transcripts from Robert Mueller’s investigation involving Donald Trump Jr., hinting at possible perjury charges against the president’s son. Posting on X that year, Schiff also wrote that President Trump may have been guilty of suborned perjury: “The allegation that the President of the United States may have suborned perjury before our committee… is among the most serious to date. We will do what’s necessary to find out if it’s true.”
That same year, Schiff credited Russia with securing Trump’s 2016 victory over Hillary Clinton, stating on X, “Russia attacked our democracy to help Trump win. Trump welcomed and used that help. As Mueller said, that should concern every American.” Mueller later testified before Congress pursuant to a subpoena, an event Schiff hailed as a chance for the public to hear directly from the special counsel.

Schiff has also consistently opposed Trump’s national security policies. In 2017, he condemned the president’s travel ban targeting countries linked to radical Islamic terrorism, calling it a “Muslim Ban” on X and accusing Trump of discriminating based on faith. In 2019, Schiff supported Representative Joaquin Castro’s resolution to block funding for Trump’s border wall, tweeting, “If we allow Trump to bypass Congress, it will eviscerate a vital check on any unethical president. Proud to cosponsor the resolution to nullify this unconstitutional declaration.”

Since his election to the United States Senate in 2024, Schiff has continued his criticism of Trump. On December 8, 2024, he touted his work on the January 6th Committee, writing on X, “When Trump tried to overturn the 2020 election, the January 6th Committee stood in defense of our democracy. Threats to jail us will not deter us.” More recently, in 2025, Schiff and Senate Judiciary Democrats worked to delay the confirmation of Kash Patel as FBI Director. Patel’s tenure has since gained attention following the FBI’s arrest of illegal immigrants tied to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

Critics argue that Schiff’s attacks on Trump’s national security agenda ring hollow given his past support for policies they claim weaken American safety, such as opposing the border wall and travel restrictions. The senator’s latest remarks about Laura Loomer and the NSC firings have reignited debates over his credibility, with opponents citing his record as evidence of partisan overreach.
