As the neck-and-neck race to the White House rumbles toward the finish line, an unexpected move by a Democrat mayor in a key battleground state may have just given one runner the win by a nose. As reported by the Conservative Brief, Amer Ghalib took the stage Friday night at a rally in Detroit and announced his official endorsement of Donald Trump.
Mayor Ghalib, an Arab American of the Muslim faith, heads an all-Muslim Muslim city council and oversees the town of Hamtramck, which has one of the highest per-capita Arab populations not only in Michigan but in the United States, arguably making Mr. Ghalib a very influential member of the Democrat Party.
Kamala Harris has faced substantial heat from the Arab American community for what they see as her failure to properly condemn the actions of Israel in its ongoing conflict in the Gaza strip, as was highlighted in an Oct. 19 New York Post report that covered anti-Israel activists who accused Vice President Harris of supporting the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
The group “Drive for 75” is working to sway the Muslim vote of Michigan away from Harris. Rex Nazarko, who heads the group told the Daily Caller that the Muslim American Community has “Lost their faith in the Democratic party and the Democrat administration.”
Khalid Turaani, leader of a group previously known as “Abandon Biden” but which has since changed its name to “Abandon Harris,” expressed similar views to the Caller, making it clear that, by not voting for Harris, the group hopes to send a message to all of those who hold political office. Said Turaani, “We’re hoping that, whether Republicans or Democrats, will not take our vote for granted.”
There are an estimated 200,000 Muslim residents in the state, and losing 75 percent of that voting bloc would undoubtedly inflict grave damage to the Harris campaign. Joe Biden only won the state by a little more than 154,000 votes in 2020, and it’s estimated that 146,000 Muslim residents voted in that election, the majority of which presumably voted for Biden.
During his endorsement speech on Friday, Mayor Ghalib stated “As you know, Donald Trump keeps saying that our country is in decline, and the ship is sinking. So sometimes it’s wise enough to sail against the wave so we can get to the shore safely under the leadership of President Trump and that’s why I endorsed President Trump in this area in Wayne County.”
Ghalib expressed his hope that this would mark an end to what he called the “disconnect” between Democrats and Republicans. He told the crowd, “Trump’s visit today is to show respect and appreciation for our community.”
Upon his turn at the podium, President Trump said, “You know, we all ultimately want one thing. We want peace in the Middle East, and we’re going to get peace in the Middle East.” In response to Trump’s words, one rallygoer shouted, “We trust you!
Mayor Ghalib later took to social media to reaffirm his endorsement. Acknowledging that he and Donald Trump do not see eye to eye on every issue, Ghalib stated, “President Trump and I may not agree on everything, but I know he is a man of principles.”
