Conservative radio show host Clay Travis theorized on Friday that Democrats need a presidential candidate who’s chill enough that others would “want to have a beer with and talk about football” with them.
Travis, the founder of OutKick, relayed this theory while speaking on Fox News’s “The Story” about something ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith had said days earlier.
Listen:
Appearing on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast last weekend, Smith said he was sick of Democrats using “demagoguery” — e.g., “Trump is a fascist,” “Trump is a racist,” etc. — to win votes.
“They don’t know what the hell they’re selling,” he began. “I’m just going to say it plain. The Democrats have gotten on my last damn nerve. If it wasn’t for Trump, I would have voted Republican because I’m so sick of how they are.”
“It’s always about the other side and engaging in demagoguery for you to get my vote, as opposed to really articulating what you’re bringing to the table to offer me and my community,” he added.
Travis agreed with this notion.
“I think he’s right there,” he said Friday on Fox News. “And, here’s an easy question, I think, for a lot of people, as it’s Thanksgiving. I hope everybody’s having a great Thanksgiving weekend. If you’re anything like my family, you’re going to be watching a lot of football.”
“Who is a Democrat right now that a man, a man who is a football fan, would like to go watch a football game with, have a beer and talk about football with? They thought Tim Walz was that guy, governor of Minnesota. Guess what? He wasn’t!” he added.
Correct. Walz turned out to be a prancing soy boy.

“I’m not sure that the Democrats have a ‘normal dude,’ and I think that’s kind of what Steven A. Smith is alluding to,” Travis continued. “The challenge that they have going forward, whether it’s AOC, whether it’s Gretchen Whitmer, whether it’s Josh Shapiro or Gavin Newsom, I don’t think they have a ‘normal guy.’ And, if you project, going forward, given how much Trump won Black, White, Asian, Hispanic men in particular, if they can’t put a dent in that, it’s only going to grow.”
“Because I think in 2028, the younger generation coming up — I’m gonna have two of my own boys who start to vote, all their friends — there is a major issue with cultural affairs as it pertains to the Democrat Party. And, if they won’t say that men can’t compete in women’s sports, they’re probably not gonna be a dude you want to have a beer with and watch a football game with this weekend or any other,” he concluded.
During Smith’s appearance on Maher’s podcast last weekend, he also slammed all the people who tolerated Trump for years but then suddenly turned around and declared him a monster after he became a Republican presidential candidate.
“When you talk about how Trump talks, we’re going like this: ‘So that’s the first time he talked like that? When he became president?’” Smith said. “We know better than that. We know better than that.”
“We know that ain’t the first time, and we know that the people he was friends with all these years, he talked just like that around y’all, and y’all didn’t have no problem with it. Don’t act like you have a problem with it now,” he added.
Others have also complained about Democrats’ demagoguery. Take CNN contributor Julie Roginsky, who perfectly diagnosed the problem with the party a couple days after Election Day.
“You know, I’m going to speak some hard truths to my friends in the Democratic Party,” she said on air at the time. “This is not Joe Biden’s fault. It’s not Kamala Harris’s fault. It’s not Barack Obama’s fault. It is the fault of the Democratic Party in not knowing how to communicate effectively to voters.”
“We are not the party of common sense, which is the message that voters sent to us. For a number of reasons, we don’t know how to speak to voters,” she added.
