From Rightwingnewshour.com:
It was recently announced that the Georgia state grand jury indicted Donald Trump and 18 other co-defendants on felony racketeering and conspiracy charges.
Despite no evidence of election fraud, many of Trump’s supporters are condemning what they view as an attempt to undermine the former president and his political allies.
While some Republicans have expressed support for the indictment, others have argued that it sets a dangerous precedent in terms of politicizing criminal justice proceedings.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis stated that “the indictment alleges that rather than abide by Georgia’s legal process for election challenges, the defendants engaged in a criminal racketeering enterprise to overturn Georgia’s presidential election result.”
This statement implies that those charged were aware of their actions being illegal or unethical, yet chose to pursue them anyway.
This is where things get interesting – all of those charged had been associated with President Trump at some point during his tenure in office.
This includes current White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, top Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark, several lawyers associated with Trump’s campaign (Jenna Ellis, Robert Cheeley, Kenneth Chesebro), senior editor at Breitbart Joel Pollak as well as others from outside politics such as pastors Stephen Lee and Ray Smith who were tied to intimidation of election workers.
It is important to note that 30 unindicted co-conspirators were also mentioned which suggests a wide range of people may have been involved in this alleged scheme.
Donald Trump’s legal team released an official statement following the announcement saying “the events that have unfolded today have been shocking and absurd.”
They went on to criticize how information regarding the indictment had been leaked even before witnesses had testified or grand jurors had deliberated.
Whether these claims hold any merit remains unclear but judging by its response it appears clear that Trump’s team does not believe he should be held accountable for any wrongdoings related to this case.
Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz echoed similar sentiments when he said “if you’re going after the man running for president against your person, you have to have the strongest case. Otherwise, it becomes a banana republic. Anybody can prosecute anybody….we’re opening the door to prosecution of Democrats by Republicans, Republicans by Democrats”.
He went on further warn about “what Alexander Hamilton wrote in The Federalist” being “the most dangerous threat to democracy” before concluding his thoughts by stressing how strongly he felt about protecting our constitutional rights regardless if he supported Trump or not.
The indictment is a joke. But it sets a standard that Republican AGs and DAs should follow in retaliation. Convene a grand jury in some Republican jurisdiction and indict Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden and the rest of them for the Russia collusion hoax. One law for all. https://t.co/yimNKuMemG
