(LibertySociety.com) – In the aftermath of President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory, the State Department reportedly organized therapy sessions for employees struggling with the outcome. Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA) has called out Secretary of State Antony Blinken over the initiative, arguing that it misuses taxpayer money and raises questions about the nonpartisan nature of government employees.
Reports indicate that at least two therapy sessions were held, including one described as a “cry session,” to help employees process their emotions. Additionally, an email circulated within the department promoted a stress-management webinar, encouraging employees to utilize resources for coping.
Issa criticized the program, questioning both its appropriateness and its financial impact. “This is a misuse of taxpayer dollars,” Issa stated. “Nonpartisan employees should be focused on supporting the administration, not wallowing in partisan disappointment.” He also raised concerns about how such programs might affect employees’ willingness to implement Trump’s foreign policy agenda when he takes office in January.
The costs and extent of these sessions remain unclear, as the State Department has not responded to inquiries about the initiative. Critics like Issa argue that the use of government funds for emotional support sessions sets a troubling precedent and detracts from the department’s core mission of advancing U.S. interests abroad.
Proponents of workplace wellness programs, however, might see such efforts as a way to maintain morale during times of significant political change. Yet, the “cry session” report has sparked debate about the role of personal feelings in a nonpartisan government environment, particularly when preparing for a new administration with sharply different priorities.
This controversy comes as Trump’s election has already generated tensions across various federal agencies. While some employees are adapting to the prospect of significant policy shifts, others are reportedly struggling to reconcile their personal beliefs with the new administration’s agenda.
As questions about the therapy sessions linger, Issa and other lawmakers are demanding transparency about their cost and scope. Meanwhile, the State Department’s silence has left critics and observers wondering about the broader implications of the program.
