In a move that has ignited fierce debate within his base, President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Dr. Janette Nesheiwat for U.S. Surgeon General has exposed deep divisions among his supporters over her past Covid-19 positions.
Resist the Mainstream reported that Trump announced the selection Friday, praising Nesheiwat, a former Fox News contributor and medical doctor, as “a strong communicator for preventive medicine and public health.”
The nomination quickly sparked backlash from prominent conservative voices who scrutinized her previous stances on pandemic measures, however.
Leading the criticism is former One America News Network anchor Liz Wheeler, who labeled Nesheiwat’s past support for masking during the pandemic a “dealbreaker.”
Wheeler publicly called for Nesheiwat to withdraw her candidacy, describing her as “not a leader” but “a sheep” who “mindlessly parroted ‘the experts’ covid tyranny.”
The controversy centers largely around Nesheiwat’s earlier positions, including her enthusiastic endorsement of Facebook’s Covid information censorship policies.
“First of all, vaccines save lives and I am so excited and I thank and I commend Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg for taking action because this affects everyone,” Nesheiwat said during a Fox Business Network appearance.
“I am very concerned about this nomination,” one outraged X user posted. “We don’t need a medical tyrant.”
“I don’t care if she came to Jesus later. You did this sh*t during the scamdemic when people were vulnerable,” the social media commentator added.
“ I will not forgive nor forget these people.”
Trump’s campaign team has highlighted what appears to be an evolution in Nesheiwat’s views.
The Trump War Room social media account shared videos showing her more recent criticism of Covid mandates, including her strong opposition to the CDC’s decision to add the Covid vaccine to the childhood schedule.
In an October 2022 appearance with Tucker Carlson, Nesheiwat stated, “There’s no good reason to have a vaccine that can’t stop disease, can’t stop transmission of disease, on this schedule of vaccination … This vote was irresponsible and illogical.”
If confirmed, Nesheiwat would join an administration that includes other controversial health policy figures, such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
Kennedy has been an outspoken critic of vaccines and mask mandates.
Daily Caller noted that adding another layer of complexity to the nomination is Nesheiwat’s family connection to the administration through her sister Julia, who is married to Trump’s National Security Advisor pick, Rep. Michael Waltz.
Julia Nesheiwat’s affiliations with organizations like the Atlantic Council and the Council on Foreign Relations have drawn scrutiny, particularly given Kennedy’s criticism of these institutions’ influence on policy.
The nominee’s professional background includes serving as medical director for CityMD clinic chain, alongside her role as a Fox News medical contributor.
If confirmed, she would report to the assistant secretary for health, a position for which Trump has yet to name a candidate at the time of this writing.
