Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted sex trafficker and former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein, spent her Thanksgiving in a Florida prison “starving.” Maxwell, 61, is serving a 20-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee for her role in Epstein’s sex trafficking ring.
Sources told the Daily Mail that she and other inmates in the prison “are starving” due to food shortages caused by funding shortages.
“This has been going on since last week. The inmates have been told the Bureau of Prisons has run out of money and Ghislaine and the others have been left starving,” one source told the outlet. “Portion sizes have been cut from 8oz to 2oz and Ghislaine hasn’t had food for five days.”
“The prison says it can’t afford to buy the vegetarian diet plan she is on. She and the others are going hungry.”
The Florida Department of Corrections has offered vegan meal options to inmates statewide since the early to mid-1990s, according to the vegan website harm.less. Approximately 800 inmates currently opt for these herbivorous options.
Due to financial issues, inmates were also informed that there was “no money for medication.”
“The prisoners who need medication, everything from chemotherapy drugs to blood pressure medication, were pulled to one side and told there isn’t money for the drugs,” another source revealed, calling the situation “insane.”
This week, Maxwell lost her latest appeal of her December 2021 conviction for her role in sexually abusing several underage girls and luring them to Epstein, who died by apparent suicide on August 10, 2019, while in federal custody at New York City’s Metropolitan Correctional Center, according to Politico.
Maxwell pleaded not guilty and still declared her innocence to international journalist Daphne Barak, who interviewed her on Sunday.
During the interview, Maxwell said that meeting Epstein was “the greatest mistake of my life.”
“‘I didn’t know that he was so awful,” she said. “I mean, obviously now, looking back with hindsight, of course. But at the time, I mean he had lots of friends.”
“He was friendly with just about everybody you could imagine. There was no reason to imagine that he was someone who was capable of evil.”
While the crime she is convicted of is heinous, one source said that inmates should not have to live in “inhumane” conditions.
“People have no sympathy for prisoners but there is a difference between an inmate serving time for a crime and being inhumanely punished,” the source said. “What is going on in Tallahassee is inhumane.”
The conditions of the prison were confirmed in a report last year by the Department of Justice, which described them as “alarming.”
The report detailed shocking conditions at the women’s prison, including moldy bread, spoiled vegetables, rodent droppings in food storage areas, cereal infested with insects, and damaged food containers.
It also highlighted severe maintenance issues, such as leaking roofs in all five general housing units, with water frequently dripping into living spaces. In some areas, inmates resorted to using feminine hygiene products to soak up water from leaking windows.
