Approximately 25 anti-Israel protesters were arrested Thursday morning after blocking the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade route, forcing the iconic Ronald McDonald balloon to halt its procession.
The demonstration unfolded at roughly 9:25 a.m. at the intersection of West 55th Street and Fifth Avenue, where protesters breached parade barriers and staged a sit-in on the street.
Demonstrators unfurled a banner declaring “Don’t celebrate genocide!” while chanting “Free, free Palestine!” as parade spectators voiced their disapproval.
The NYPD quickly responded to the disruption, though witness accounts and footage captured by The New York Post depicted a more intense confrontation than official police statements suggested.
While some protesters peacefully complied with authorities, others were forcibly restrained as officers tackled them to the ground and secured them in handcuffs.
The outlet reported that video footage showed physical struggles between law enforcement and protesters holding the banner before they were subdued.
The protesters, identified by independent reporter Talia Jane as “autonomous anti-genocide activists,” were transported to One Police Plaza’s mass arrest processing center, where they spent several hours of their Thanksgiving Day.
The demonstration succeeded in interrupting the parade–New York City’s beloved Thanksgiving Day tradition–for approximately five minutes before order was restored.
A Brooklyn police officer, speaking about the incident to the Post, stated, “This is disgusting. There are times and places to peacefully protest, but not the Thanksgiving day parade.”
“This a day [sic] for families to enjoy and not be interrupted by these a–holes.”
The disruption came despite explicit warnings from Mayor Eric Adams, who had addressed potential protesters the night before the parade.
“I really want to take the moment to tell those grinches that believe they are going to disrupt the parade that it is not going to happen,” Adams had declared, per the Post.
The outlet noted that this year’s protest resulted in fewer arrests compared to the 2022 parade, where approximately 40 individuals were taken into custody after some glued themselves to the parade route.
City Hall spokeswoman Kayla Mamelak condemned the demonstration, stating, “Interrupting New York City’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to protest a conflict overseas is disrespectful and accomplishes absolutely nothing.”
“They have won over no one, and, instead, have just disrupted a fun day for thousands.”
The protest activities extended beyond the parade route.
Additional demonstrators hung banners from the Queensboro Bridge with messages about “genocide” and calls to “Free Palestine, free the land, free them all.”
A statement attributed to the protesters and shared by reporter Talia Jane connected their actions to broader historical contexts, describing the holiday as commemorating “its first but not only genocide.”
Parade spectators largely expressed frustration with the interruption, with many in the crowd booing the protesters and showing more interest in the approaching Bluey balloon than the demonstration.
One vocal parade-goer was heard shouting, “Get the hell out of here,” amid the chorus of disapproval.
