Matthew 12:48-50 (NIV) 48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
After Jesus entered Samaria, the Gospel accounts rarely mention his family. There was a shift after His resurrection, but they did not follow Him during His ministry. This is a rare occurrence. Jesus was probably speaking to a large gathering in a structure. His relatives had conveyed word that they wished to chat with him. Jesus’ reaction was not one of rejection of his family. He was expressing a profound truth. Families that do the will of the Father in heaven are the most important.
We don’t appear to understand the full extent of that truth today. Our assemblies are more like locations where we meet together with like-minded friends than with family. There are numerous exceptions. Smaller groupings are more family-oriented. If you are not part of a small group of approximately a dozen people, look for one. Spend some time in those groups praying for one another’s issues. Urge one another to do the Father’s will, even though the cost is high. Then stand by and offer each other support.
Do you regard those who carry out the Father’s will to be your mother, brother, and sister? They do not have the same attitude, dress in the same manner, or belong to the same socioeconomic class. The foundation of unity is God’s obedience. You have the same spirit in that regard. You have had the similar experience of walking by faith rather than sight. You and I both battle with male rejection and misunderstanding. You don’t even have to share a common culture or language. It’s the same love that beats inside your chest. Because you have the same Parent and the same desire to please Him, you are brothers for life!
Think about it: Do you have a spiritual family?
The Great Tribulation
It is our belief that the Great Tribulation referred to in the New Testament Book of Revelation (chapters 6-11) is unfolding before our eyes. In the near future, we will devote the “Tribulation” tab on our “Trending” menu to this emerging reality. As people continue to unplug from mainstream media, our commitment is to present the truth and encourage our audience to understand current events from a Biblical perspective. The Watchman
In the Bible, the Watchman is responsible for keeping watch and warning others of potential danger or impending judgment. The role is mentioned several times in the Old Testament, particularly in the book of Ezekiel. In Ezekiel 33:6, God says to the prophet Ezekiel, “But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.” Click here to begin the journey.
