Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and President-elect Donald Trump engaged in a high-stakes dialogue about border security, migration and drug trafficking that quickly became a global headline.
Trump initially claimed a breakthrough, announcing on Truth Social that Sheinbaum had agreed to “stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.”
Sheinbaum swiftly contradicted this assertion while MAGA was conducting a victory lap.
She soon emphasized Mexico’s stance of not closing borders but “building bridges between governments and between peoples,” a Google translation of her post on X reads.
MAGA was quick to rip Sheinbaum for her rebuttal. “You are killing millions of our children by allowing drugs to pour in,” one X user stated.
“The people of Mexico have failed the world by allowing this evil monster in office.”
Daily Mail reported that the confrontation emerged after a tense two-day back-and-forth involving immigration, fentanyl and potential trade sanctions.
Trump had previously threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canada and Mexico, demanding an end to drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
Sheinbaum responded to Trump’s tariff threat by pointing out that 70 percent of illegal weapons seized from criminals in Mexico originate from the United States, per Daily Mail.
She warned that retaliatory tariffs could potentially harm major American companies like General Motors, Stellantis and Ford Motor Company.
Despite initial tensions, both leaders described their conversation as “wonderful” and “productive.”
Sheinbaum highlighted Mexico’s comprehensive migration strategy, noting that caravans are now being addressed within Mexico before reaching the northern border.
Daily Mail highlighted that federal data reveals the scale of the migration challenge, with nearly 11 million migrant encounters since fiscal year 2021.
Sheinbaum noted a significant reduction, however, stating that border encounters have decreased by 75 percent since last December.
Trump also announced plans for a large-scale advertising campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl, addressing the over 100,000 overdose deaths in the United States over the past four years.
The diplomatic exchange underscores the complex challenges of border security, migration and international relations between the United States and Mexico.
Earlier this month, Resist the Mainstream covered another dialogue between Sheinbaum and Trump; one that showcased a strong power play by the U.S. president-elect that was not initially reported.
The call happened on Nov. 7, and it was initially portrayed as a “cordial” diplomatic exchange.
Sheinbaum attempted to frame the interaction positively on social media platform X, describing it as evidence of a “good relationship” between the two nations.
The story took an unexpected turn, however, when Trump reportedly steered the conversation directly to border security concerns.
Axios revealed in a Nov. 11 report that Trump addressed the contentious border situation, signaling his administration’s priorities.
