Joe Rogan was left saying “LOL WUT” after the chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) delivered a scathing critique of his impact on American society.
Speaking at the Australian National Press Club, Kim Williams accused Rogan of exploiting public vulnerabilities.
“I think people like Mr. Rogan prey on people’s vulnerabilities,” he said, per Fox News. “They prey on fear. They prey on anxiety. They prey on all the elements that contribute to uncertainty in society.”
The ABC chairman expressed disbelief at Rogan’s influence in the U.S., describing it as “deeply repulsive,” suggesting that Rogan promotes “entrepreneurial and conspiratorial fantasy” as normal parts of social discourse.
“I personally find it deeply repulsive and to think that someone has such remarkable power in the United States is something that I look at in disbelief,” he said.
Despite admitting he does not consume “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Williams’ comments drew laughter from the audience. He went on to criticize Rogan and similar figures for “treating the public as plunder for purposes that are really quite malevolent.”
Rogan, known for his massive following with 17.3 million YouTube subscribers and 145 million on Spotify, responded briefly to Williams’ remarks with a succinct “LOL WUT” post on X.
The controversy highlights the ongoing debate about the role of independent media personalities in shaping public opinion. Rogan’s podcast has gained significant attention, particularly in the context of recent political events.
Following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, many Democrats recognized the influence of independent podcasters like Rogan on modern voters. Vice President Kamala Harris notably declined an interview with Rogan, a decision widely viewed as a missed opportunity to reach younger male voters.
Rogan, who has expressed both liberal and conservative views, endorsed Trump shortly before the recent election. This move came after previously supporting Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in the 2020 Democratic primaries.
The podcaster recently addressed calls from the left for their “own Joe Rogan.”
“I think these ‘Call Her Daddy’ shows and all these different shows that [Harris] went on – I mean I’m sure they had an impact, but I think that in the future… I’m sure they’re scrambling to try to create their own version of this show,” said Rogan.
“This is one thing that keeps coming up like, ‘We need our own Joe Rogan,’ right? But they had me, I was on their side!”
Rogan has frequently faced criticism from liberals and the mainstream media for his views and what some call conspiracy theories.
He is particularly known for his controversial stance on the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been labeled as “misinformation.” Critics have taken issue with him for sharing medical advice that many argue is not supported by scientific evidence.
He recently made headlines for criticizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over his latest attack on Russia.
