After pulling up to a friendly gathering, a pair of women were confronted by masked carjackers with guns pointed straight at them. However, it took only seconds for the criminals to find out they had picked the wrong female.
The North Las Vegas Police Department announced that no charges will be filed against an unnamed woman who managed to stop a deadly carjacking by using one of the would-be robbers’ guns against her attackers. The incident occurred just east of Cheyenne High School when two women arrived for a residential party, KLAS reported.
Investigators say the women were sitting in their vehicle parked just outside the house when they noticed a car speeding toward them. The driver, identified as 18-year-old Jaylin Morrison, pulled in front of the women’s car, blocking them from leaving, and a pair of masked men with guns hastily exited the vehicle.
Police say the masked suspects, one of whom was identified as 18-year-old Devonte Madison, aimed their guns at the women before pulling open the doors and ordering them out of the car. The thieves then dragged the victims out of the car and jumped inside the vehicle. Fortunately, the suspects were confused by the push-button ignition.
While the baffled thieves were occupied with the start feature, one of the victims seized her chance to turn the tables on the carjackers. The woman snatched the gun off Devonte Madison’s lap and took off running. Refusing to let her get away, Madison chased after her and tackled her, attempting to wrestle the gun away from her.
According to the victims’ statements, the woman fatally shot Devonte Madison in the head with his own gun, killing him. She then ran to a nearby house as the second suspect fired multiple shots at her. The woman says she unjammed the gun while she hid in the yard until she heard police sirens nearby. She then approached officers with her hands up and was immediately placed under arrest.
Police discovered Devonte Madison profusely bleeding from the head. He was pronounced dead on arrival, KTLA reported. Jaylin Morrison was later arrested after cellphone records linked him to the crime scene. Police then found three guns in his apartment and ammunition matching the weapon recovered at the site of the shooting.
Morrison was charged with 2nd-degree kidnapping, conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, burglary with a deadly weapon, and attempted grand larceny of a vehicle. At the time of his arrest, detectives were reportedly still searching for a third suspect believed to have been directly involved in the carjacking.
Devonte Madison’s family has come forward in the wake of his death. They have described him as an “aspiring entrepreneur” who was living in West Virginia and had been learning how to run a business with his older brother. He had reportedly graduated with a 3.9 GPA and was a quarterback in high school.
Investigators have assured that the woman who fatally shot Devonte Madison did so in self-defense and will not be charged. Instead, the woman has been commended for her bravery.
Crime has gotten out of control, thanks to policies limiting policing and tieing the hands of the justice system. As such, citizens are taking matters into their own hands as both a deterrent to criminals and a solution to the injustice of the court.
