Having just returned from two weeks harvesting olives in the south of France, I am astonished at the change of tone on the Democrat cable news networks.
From Trump the dictator, and Hitler-Trump, it’s now, well, we blew the election by failing to understand that most Americans just wanted lower gas prices and a little mortgage relief. Oh, and now that we think of it, tariffs probably won’t be all that bad.
Call it the Trump Effect.
It’s impact is being felt far and wide, and not just here in the U.S.
Trump’s threat (call it a promise) on Monday to impose tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada if they don’t work with us to reduce illegal immigration and drug trafficking has had an immediate impact. The leaders of all three countries are already looking to see what they need to do to avoid those tariffs.
Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, a leftist, has told the New York Times she is contemplating “retaliatory” tariffs. But she has told the Mexican car industry they had better scramble to replace Chinese auto parts with locally-made parts or even – gasp – parts purchased from the United States. Why? Because otherwise Trump will cancel Mexican participation in the USMCA trade agreement, ban Mexican imports entirely, and impose a tax on remittances from Mexican immigrants living in the United States.
Vladimir Putin has also taken notice. After Joe Biden recklessly authorized Ukraine to use American-supplied ATACMS long-range missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia – tantamount to directly engaging the United States in war with Russia, since those missiles must be operated by US personnel – Putin hit Ukraine with a new intermediate-range ballistic missile.
Putin was careful to explain on international television that this was a deliberate act, and that the new missile was carrying a Russia’s hypersonic glide vehicle warhead, which he claimed cannot be intercepted by any existing missile defense system.
So watch out Poland, Romania, and yes, even France. Your military production facilities could become targets.
Of course, Putin knows Biden cannot send large numbers of US troops to Ukraine during the lame duck period, so this was a message to Biden to “knock it off,” as Ole Joe likes to say. Meanwhile, he expects to talk turkey with Trump after January 20.
The Iranian regime is quietly pushing Lebanon’s Hezbollah terrorists to agree to a 60-day ceasefire with Israel, which would require Hezbollah to abandon its buried fortresses along the Israeli border, in exchange for an Israeli pullout.
That agreement is supposed to be enforced by the Lebanese Armed Forces, which have failed to assert control over Lebanon’s national territory since their creation in 1943 under the French. Think they will confront Hezbollah today? I don’t.
The agreement is also supposed to be policed by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, created to stand between Palestinian guerilla fighters and the Israeli border in 1978. I have visited UNIFIL positions many times, as you can read in my latest book, The Iran House. And while individual officers may be gentlemen, they have zero authority to do anything except clean their own latrines. The Israelis have bombed Hezbollah missile launchers set up less than 100 yards from UNIFIL positions, all the while UNIFIL soldiers manned the guard.
It’s the Iranians who will enforce the agreement, at least temporarily. They are hoping they can play rope a dope with Trump once he returns to the Oval Office, with specious offers of a new nuclear deal that will keep their regime alive. Stay tuned on that one.
All of this in just three weeks since Donald Trump won the election. And I haven’t even mentioned the Trump Effect on the markets, or bitcoin, or consumer confidence.
At the Pentagon, the Obama-Biden woke generals are frantically erasing any reference to DEI and “white rage” from Department of Defense websites and training manuals, hoping that incoming Sec/Def Pete Hegseth is too dumb to consult the Internet archive. Fat chance!
Oh what a wonderful country this is. And thank the Lord for answered prayers.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Yours in freedom.
