Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is facing accusations of planning and executing a coup attempt to overturn Brazil’s 2022 presidential election results. The Federal Police of Brazil alleges that Bolsonaro actively directed a conspiracy to remain in power despite his defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Investigators claim Bolsonaro sought to undermine the nation’s democracy, including a meeting in December 2022 with military commanders to discuss suspending the electoral court and probing unfounded election fraud claims.
Although navy leaders reportedly backed the proposal, resistance from other military branches stopped the plan.
Police further allege Bolsonaro was aware of discussions to assassinate Lula and Vice President-elect Geraldo Alckmin, based on intercepted communications.
The report accuses Bolsonaro and 36 alleged co-conspirators of staging a coup, dismantling the rule of law and forming a criminal organization.
Bolsonaro denies the allegations, calling them “absurd” and asserting his innocence. He is already facing charges for falsifying COVID-19 vaccination records, smuggling jewelry and inciting the Jan. 8 riots in Brasilia, where his supporters stormed government buildings.
If convicted, Bolsonaro could face 15 years in prison.
