While Vladimir Putin continues to intensify threats of a nuclear response against the West, Russian soldiers are reportedly preparing for a “chemical war” on the frontlines of Ukraine.
Knewz.com has learned that footage purportedly showing a Russian military unit specializing in radiation, chemical, and biological warfare has been making rounds on social media.
Footage of Russian soldiers shared on Telegram was accompanied by the text, “November 13 – Day of radiation, chemical, and biological defense troops.”
According to the Telegram posts, the preparations for the specialized Russian military unit involve “camouflage of troops and equipment,” which includes flamethrowers and thermobaric weapons.
The reports on Telegram further mentioned that the specialized chemical warfare unit of the Russian forces has been active in an “endless list” of areas, including Syria, Chernobyl, Zaporizhzhia, and Kursk.
Reports of the Russian chemical warfare unit came weeks after Ukrainian soldiers reported the use of a new and undetectable gas by Putin’s forces to choke enemy soldiers on the battlefield.
According to the reports from early November, Putin has been using drones to drop gas grenades into dugouts where Ukrainian troops are holed up, forcing them out in the open—where they are hunted down using drones and artillery attacks.
Ukrainian Colonel Artem Vlasiuk reported that the new wave of chemical warfare by Putin poses a serious threat since the nation’s troops have been unable to identify the majority of the ages used by Russia.
It has been reported that Ukraine lacks the high-end detector technology required to identify the new gases deployed by Putin in the war.
According to the Armed Forces officer, given Ukrainian troops’ current repertoire, they can only identify “the few prototypes in its library. “
He added that there had been 323 recorded cases of Russian chemical attacks in October alone—Ukrainian troops could identify the types of gas used in only 15 of these instances, per Colonel Vlasiuk.
“It is dangerous both for our troops and for Ukraine as a whole, which will not be able to prove anything at the international level,” the Ukrainian armed forces officer said in a statement.
“We can detect tear gas, but if the enemy uses something else more complex, newer, or a mix that is similar in composition but not tear gas, we can’t identify it,” the Ukrainian colonel added.
Reports mentioned that Ukraine needs “‘hundreds’ of complex detectors that cost $100,000 to $600,000 each to better identify what exactly is being used by Russian troops, according to the colonel. Kyiv also needs additional simpler ones already being used to identify whether there are ‘dangerous chemicals.’”
Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, former commanding officer of the United Kingdom’s Joint Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Regiment, also concurs with Colonel Vlasiuk’s statement regarding the requirements of the Ukrainian armed forces, saying that the nation needs at least “a few hundred” hand-held detectors that cost roughly $10,000 to $50,000 each.
Bretton-Gordon said in a recent statement that what Ukraine “really wants” right now are “some gas masks.”
“If they had that, then, they would be, much, you know, in a much better position to fight back against the Russians than they are at the moment,” the former British Army officer added.
“I am trying to help them crowdfund, beg, borrow and steal them [for the Ukrainian troops]. [But] I think it’s not a headline issue. For one storm shadow missile, you could probably give enough gas masks to half the Ukraine army,” he further explained.
He said in a statement to the Daily Express, “Putin still using [chemical weapons] on a daily basis and the Russians are making some pretty impressive gains in the Donbas.”
“But actually, if Putin decided to use some of these more deadly chemical weapons like Novichok that would probably be more dangerous than using a tactical nuclear weapon in Ukraine. So these are things that must be looked at very closely,” he added.
In this regard, the British military official said in his statement that it was “beyond” him why “sourcing gas masks was not more of a priority for Ukraine’s allies,” according to reports.
Bretton-Gordon theorized that the reason why the Western allies have not prioritized the supply of gas masks to Ukrainian forces was because Russia reportedly uses CS gas on the battlefield—a chemical weapon that can incapacitate, but not kill an enemy.
On the other hand, Russian President Putin has also stepped up his hostile nuclear rhetoric against the Western allies of Ukraine, especially the United States, over its authorization to use the nation’s missiles to attack targets deep within the Russian territory.
An expert recently stated that the U.S. – and the Western allies of Ukraine – have opened a nuclear “Pandora’s Box” in Russia with the decisions they made regarding the embattled nation over the course of the war.
Putin commented on the reported White House authorization to Ukraine, saying, “It is not a question of allowing the Kyiv regime to strike Russia with these weapons or not. It is a question of making a decision on whether NATO countries will directly participate in the military conflict or not.”
Russian media outlets claimed that Ukraine does not have the means necessary to “independently” carry out long-range strikes using U.S.-supplied missiles and will have to rely on reconnaissance provided by “regular NATO servicemen.”
