Matthew 11:6… “And blessed is the person who doesn’t take offense at me.”
John the Baptist heard about the wonders that Jesus and His followers did while he was in jail under Herod. John had his own friends check with Jesus to see if he really was the Messiah. Before he baptized Jesus in the Jordan, John already said that Jesus was the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). What made John wonder is something we can only guess. It could have been the difference in their calling and way of life. Or John might have been confused about why Jesus didn’t save him.
Friends of John were told by Jesus to tell him what they saw and heard. Hearing was restored to the deaf, sight was restored to the blind, and the poor were told good news (Matthew 11:4-5). Lepers were cleaned and the dead were raised from the dead. They saw that the book of Isaiah’s predictions about the Messiah came true. John often quoted from this book (Isaiah 29:18–19, 42:6-7, 61:1).
We can get angry with God when we don’t understand what He is letting us go through. “Why did He let this happen?” He will surely save me if He is really God. When our own problems come up, we often ask God for help. Our situation could be due to our sin, the sin of others, or just the fact that we live in a world that is broken. God doesn’t promise to save us from all of life’s problems. He does promise to be with us through it and make good things happen for those who love Him. John was soon killed. He was done with his job and went to get his prize.
