(LibertySociety.com) – Two weeks after Donald Trump’s decisive victory over Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, activist David Hogg voiced concern over the growing number of young men drifting away from the Democratic Party. On Tuesday, Hogg took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his plan to address the trend, writing, “We’re meeting with researchers and activists to figure out how we bring young men back into the Democrat fold. We have a lot of work to do.”
The statement comes amid mounting evidence that a significant portion of young and minority voters shifted their support to Trump in the recent election, contributing to his win.
Election data revealed notable trends among Hispanics, Asian Americans, and younger Black men, many of whom cited economic concerns as a driving factor. A report from RealClearPolitics highlighted this shift, with analyst Neetu Arnold noting that minority groups demonstrated they are “not as loyal to the [Democrat] Party as previously believed.”
The Associated Press further examined the dynamics, publishing a piece titled, “Young Black and Latino Men Say They Chose Trump Because of the Economy and Jobs.” The article explored how dissatisfaction with economic conditions under the Biden-Harris administration played a key role in their decision-making.
Polling among 18- to 29-year-old voters showed that Harris won this group by a margin of just 55% to 42%, a far narrower lead than Democrats had anticipated. Analysts noted that inflation and job prospects resonated strongly with younger voters, many of whom felt personally impacted. Pollster Ken Towery suggested that supporting Trump had even become “cool” on some college campuses, reminiscent of the youth enthusiasm Ronald Reagan generated in 1980.
Hogg, once optimistic about youth turnout favoring Democrats, had posted on November 5: “Young people are going to deliver victories for Democrats.” However, his tone shifted significantly after the election results, acknowledging the challenge of reconnecting with young male voters.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Hogg wrote, signaling a need for the Democratic Party to reevaluate its strategies and priorities moving forward. The issue has sparked widespread discussion, with activists emphasizing the importance of addressing economic concerns to regain trust among younger demographics.
