It seems the American president-elect’s reported admiration for Vladimir Putin is not one-sided, as the Russian President congratulated “Real man” Donald Trump on his White House victory.
Knewz.com has learned that amidst concerns about what a Trump presidency could mean for the future of the Ukraine war, the Russian autocrat has reportedly said that he is ready to begin talks regarding the matter.
It is worth noting that Trump has long claimed that the Ukraine war would not have come to pass if he had won his re-election bid in 2020, and has repeated said claims during his Presidential campaign for the 2024 elections.
On the campaign trail, Trump claimed that, if elected President, he would end the ongoing conflict within 24 hours of taking Office—without ever elaborating on how he plans to do so.
The Republican Vice President-elect J. D. Vance had previously provided a rough outline of how Trump intends to handle the Ukraine war—and it is seemingly in line with the reported “deal” that Putin wants to cut with the embattled nation.
Vance explained that Trump suggested the current frontline of the war be “frozen,” and that Russia be allowed to retain the territory it has already annexed from Ukraine over the course of the conflict.
Furthermore, the settlement outlined by Vance also stipulated that Ukraine would not join NATO, although the embattled nation has been on the precipice of its ascension to the alliance.
The settlement proposed by the Trump campaign is reportedly congruent with the terms Putin put forward as a proposed means to bring the invasion to an end.
It is worth noting in this regard that U.S. intelligence officials claimed earlier in 2024 that Trump is exactly the person Putin wants to see reinstated in the White House.
Congratulating the 78-year-old Republican candidate on his election win, Putin shared a statement, saying, “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate him on his election as president of the United States of America.”
According to reports, the Russian President also praised Trump for surviving multiple assassination attempts, calling the President-elect a “real man.”
“He behaved, in my opinion, in a very correct way, courageously, like a real man,” Putin was quoted as saying.
It has been reported that Putin later made another remark regarding Trump, saying that “he felt as if Trump was ‘bullied’ during his first spell in the White House.”
Kremlin politicians have so far expressed a positive sentiment regarding Trump’s White House win. Noted Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in a statement that although he believes Trump’s claims of being able to resolve the Ukraine war in 24 hours is an “overexaggeration,” he is still somewhat hopeful about the upcoming presidential term.
“Of course, there was a little bit of overexaggeration that he would be able to do it overnight. Certainly, there’s nothing that can heal this problem overnight,” Peskov commented.
“But at least if the new administration is going to look for peace, not for the continuation of the war, it will be better,” he added in his statement.
Vladimir Pozner, a longtime Russian and Soviet state television journalist, said in an interview that Russian pro-war politicians view Trump as a President who would help end the war “probably in Russia’s favor.”
“There is this general feeling that Trump would be better for Russia… Maybe we’ll be finished with this war, and maybe the relationship will improve,” Pozner was quoted as saying.
Kirill Dmitriev, the head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund and a close ally of Putin, also commented on the implications of a Trump White House, saying, “Trump and his team have a reputation of being very pragmatic.”
He added that Trump’s election victory would be an opportunity to “look at things in a more problem-solving manner than was done by previous administrations.”
He further stated that a change in the American regime presented “new opportunities for resetting relations between Russia and the United States” after the “lies, incompetence and malice of the Biden administration.”
On the other hand, it is worth noting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously retorted to Trump’s claims of bringing a swift end to the war, saying, “I will need 24 minutes… to explain to President Trump that he can’t manage this war.”
“He can’t bring peace because of Putin,” Zelensky said at the time.
