In a stunning development that could reshape political discourse on social media, X boss Elon Musk has launched an investigation into alleged artificial manipulation of Vice President Kamala Harris’s online presence.
This shock move follows explosive revelations about coordinated efforts to boost her digital footprint.
The probe comes after The Federalist published a multi-part investigative series detailing how Democratic operatives allegedly orchestrated widespread “astroturfing” campaigns across major social media platforms, including X and Reddit, to create an illusion of broader public support.
“We are investigating this,” Musk confirmed on X, responding to the allegations.
His announcement follows his earlier warning to voters at a Pennsylvania rally about electoral concerns regarding Harris, The Federalist highlighted.
According to an internet watchdog known as Reddit Lies, writing in The Federalist, the Harris campaign has employed sophisticated astroturfing techniques – a practice where coordinated messaging campaigns create a false impression of grassroots support.
The investigation revealed that on Reddit, the world’s sixth-most visited website, Harris campaign volunteers dominated the political conversation.
“126 of the top 1,000 posts in the past month on r/Politics were posted by official Harris-Walz campaign volunteers,” the watchdog reported, highlighting the campaign’s significant influence on the platform.
“Owning one out of every eight of all top posts in r/Politics is not an easy feat, and it doesn’t just *happen*,” Reddit Lies wrote, suggesting a deliberate strategy to bypass platform safeguards against spam activities.
The investigation also uncovered alleged manipulation of X’s Community Notes feature, a tool designed to provide fact-checking and additional context to posts.
According to the report, Harris supporters systematically downvoted community notes that reflected negatively on the campaign, while campaign staffers allegedly created favorable notes to counter Republican messaging.
The watchdog compared the practice to fake product reviews on e-commerce platforms: “It’s no different than a shady company paying a team to write a bunch of fake Amazon reviews about their product to make it appear to be a better and more popular product than it is.”
The implications for electoral integrity could be significant.
“In a U.S. election, it could mean that the falsely advertised candidate receives more votes,” the Reddit Lies warned, noting that such behavior potentially violates platform terms of service agreements.
The investigation detailed how paid Democratic staffers allegedly coordinated these efforts through Discord channels, with a dedicated “twitter-community-notes” channel used to organize voting patterns on X’s fact-checking feature.
Despite X’s recent reform measures under Musk’s leadership, the report claims that “virtually none of the false and misleading tweets from Kamala Harris’ campaign have Community Notes appended to them,” suggesting successful circumvention of the platform’s fact-checking mechanisms.
