Democrats desperately trying to grab at gamers before the election is over and they’ve gone from weak to ridiculous in a span of weeks. It started with Walz live-streaming his rally on Twitch with a separate stream of World Of Warcraft gameplay right below it at the same time. The reaction was immensely negative. It was a media overstimulation tactic — like pairing “Family Guy” clips with Subway Surfers gameplay at the bottom, overstimulating the both brain and decreasing the attention span.
Since then they have tried two new approaches in the last week, one being an actual live-stream that Walz seemingly reluctantly committed to, which has to be torture when you absolutely do not care. But he wasn’t alone this time; he played alongside Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has lightly used her Twitch channel since 2020, discussing electoral politics and pretend-playing Madden NFL 25.
“I see gamers, many times, are on the front end of this,” Walz said about engaging potential voters on Twitch and live-streaming platforms. “It’s a collaborative community and they’re competitive … I see many folks who are cynical about this. I hear it all the time, ‘I’m just not into politics.’ Too bad! Politics is into you.’”
But the livestream wasn’t without its flaws. Aside from the uncomfortable pressure of watching two very uninterested people pretending to play video games, “former high school defensive coach” Tim Walz was widely mocked for misusing a common football term.
After the “gaming session” was done, Walz posted on X that Ocasio-Cortez “could run a mean pick 6,” meaning when a defender returns an interception for a touchdown.
“And we both know when you take the time to draw up a playbook, you’re gonna use it.” The post was quickly deleted, but not before the internet cataloged it and laughed. Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance, of Ohio, noted the difference between a pick 6 and offensive plays, saying,
“You don’t run a pick-six, you run the West Coast offense or the spread offense,” Vance said at a campaign rally. “It made me realize that even though they say Tim Walz was a football coach, I think I know more about football than Tim Walz. And it’s appropriate ’cause I think my running mate, Donald J. Trump knows more about working at McDonald’s than Kamala Harris does.”
It’s like they’re trying to be incompetent on purpose. Meanwhile, Walz has taken point trying to connect with the younger generation while Kamala contributed by making a custom map in Fortnite.
Yeah, that’s pretty low. Fortnite has allowed players to create their own maps and game modes for a long time now, some of which see a peak of almost 400 thousand players out of the millions of people playing. But Kamala’s? The map only peaked at 383 players according to Fortnite.GG.
As of today the player count is around 500, as players with a morbid curiosity decide to see what the map is like, finding corny little in-game tasks like: Look at an advertisement, “rebuild” homes, finding posters that got blown away by the wind, observe another advertisement, realize that there are no guns in the massively popular gun game, and of course, watch some more advertisements.
She didn’t even bother playing the game with anyone, it’s like she has a fear of talking to people unscripted. She is either barely trying, or couldn’t care less about video games and the generation that frequently enjoys them. The errors in basic terminology, the hokey shoehorning of video game footage with speeches, and downright terrible custom maps for players to … uh, experience? I almost feel bad for laughing because it’s so sad. Is this really all they have to pull in young voters? Or do they just not care?
Will it be enough to fool the youth vote?
