Steven K. Bannon is set to be released from federal prison on Connecticut on Tuesday morning where he has spent the past four months serving a sentence for contempt of congress. The War Room anchor and former advisor to Donald Trump will hold a press conference in New York at 3 pm.
Bannon was sentenced to four months for contempt of Congress after refusing to turn over confidential communications between himself and Trump in the lead up to and aftermath of the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Congress subpoenaed Bannon’s records but he attested, as did Trump, that they were protected by presidential executive privilege.
The back-and-forth went on for months before Trump released his hold and Bannon said he was therefore willing to turn over the communications.
Congress was determined to press charges anyway and Bannon was convicted, a sentence passed against him. Bannon appealed the sentence and sought to remain a free man as that appeal played out in court, but the court refused and Bannon was sent to a federal penitentiary in Connecticut at the FCI Danbury prison. He reported to that facility on July 1 and was unable therefore to attend the Republican National Convention.
His absence has been felt in conservative media though his show has continued with a cadre of rotating hosts along with mainstay Natalie Winters.
His release has been long anticipated and he is expected to head back into the studio and is rumored to be considering hitting the campaign trail for Trump.
“Expect to see a newly invigorated Stephen K. Bannon, more intent than ever to take his fight to the administrative state. I would not be surprised to see him immediately hitting the campaign trail, as well as hosting his ‘War Room’ show for four hours each day. Every second will count. Every word will matter,” National Pulse editor-in-chief Raheem Kassam said.
