A quiet Cincinnati suburb is experiencing an unprecedented population explosion as thousands of African asylum seekers, guided by viral TikTok videos, have transformed the community of Lockland, Ohio, into an unexpected immigration hotspot.
Daily Mail reported that the village of just 1.2 square miles has seen its population nearly double in the past year, surging from 3,500 residents to over 6,500 as more than 3,000 Mauritanian asylum seekers have settled in the area.
Local officials are scrambling to manage the sudden demographic shift, which they say is straining municipal resources and creating significant financial challenges.
Lockland Village Administrator Doug Wehmeyer told Fox News Digital that the influx stems from a broader trend of Mauritanian immigration to the United States.
“If you look at 2021, 2022, the United States had seen a huge influx of immigrants from Mauritania,” Wehmeyer said.
“Somehow, a good number of them have landed in Lockland.”
The remarkable migration pattern has been fueled by social media, particularly TikTok, where “guides” posting in French provide detailed instructions for reaching the United States.
The popular route takes migrants from the Northwest African nation through Turkey and South America before entering the United States, with Nicaragua serving as a crucial waypoint due to its lenient visa requirements.
“The American dream is still available,” promises one TikTok video, among countless others offering guidance to potential migrants.
These digital roadmaps have created a virtual pipeline directing Mauritanians specifically to Lockland, per Daily Mail.
Mayor Mark Mason expressed concern about the sustainability of the situation to ABC affiliate WCPO, citing significant financial implications for the small community.
“We’re looking at, right now, at probably close to a $200,000 shortfall in our earnings income tax revenue,” Mason said, noting that many new arrivals are not yet authorized to work.
The impact on emergency services has been particularly dramatic.
Wehmeyer, who also serves as fire chief, reported a 12 percent increase in emergency calls this year, with most new calls originating from complexes housing Mauritanian residents.
Overcrowding has become a serious concern, with up to dozen people sharing single units in approximately 200 housing locations.
One recent incident highlighted the scale of the situation when a structure fire at the Mulberry Court complex required the evacuation of hundreds of residents.
“In 35 years in the fire service, I don’t think I’ve ever seen more people standing outside the outside of a building as I did when we arrived on scene,” Wehmeyer recalled.
The surge in Mauritanian arrivals represents a significant shift in U.S. immigration patterns.
From March to June alone, over 8,500 Mauritanians crossed the Mexican border, compared to just 1,000 in the previous four months, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data cited by Daily Mail.
Many so-called newcomers cite racial tensions and political persecution in their homeland as reasons for seeking asylum.
Mauritania, which only recently criminalized slavery, continues to grapple with social unrest, particularly following the death of a young black man, Oumar Diop, in police custody last May.
