North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has sent 10,000 troops to Russia for training and deployment in Vladimir Putin‘s war with Ukraine.
Knewz.com has learned that North Korean soldiers are expected to clash with soldiers from Ukraine within the next few weeks, according to reports.
It has been reported that Russia has been trying to counterbalance the Western bloc of Ukraine’s allies during a recent summit with several BRICS countries, including China and India, along with the support it had been receiving from Iran and North Korea already.
While support from Iran was limited to the supply of attack drones and support from North Korea only involved sending considerable quantities of ammunition, the latter has stepped up its efforts and landed boots on the ground in the Ukraine war.
According to reports confirmed by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, some of the North Korean troops have been deployed near Kursk to push back the Ukrainian incursion in the border region further.
Western officials have stated that the deployment of North Korean troops alongside Russian soldiers in Ukraine threatens to raise political tensions in the Korean Peninsula and the wider Indo-Pacific region—including Japan and Australia.
Reports from earlier in October had already mentioned the deployment of North Korean troops in the Ukraine war, although their ranks mostly included military engineers.
Several of them reportedly turned up dead as a result of a Ukrainian missile strike on the Russian-occupied territory of Donetsk.
Kim Yong-hyun, the Defense Minister of South Korea, conveyed this in a statement to the members of the parliament at the time.
Andriy Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine’s Centre for Countering Disinformation – which is a part of the National Security Council of Ukraine – also claimed that North Koreans have been killed inside Russian territory.
Kovalenko said in a video statement:
“One piece of news is the presence of North Korean troops in the occupied territory of Ukraine, the Russians brought them to the Donetsk region. There was already information that there was a [HIMARS] attack on one of the facilities where North Korean military personnel were among [those killed in the attack].”
According to reports, the North Korean military engineers deployed in Ukraine have been included in teams supporting the launcher systems of KN-23 missiles.
Kovalenko explained in his statement that the North Korean troopers are mainly tasked with accompanying the “cargo” of weapons supplied by their nation and monitoring their use in the Ukraine war.
Regarding the deployment of North Korean soldiers in Ukraine, the NATO chief commented that it represents “a significant escalation” in the nation’s involvement in the war and labeled it a “dangerous expansion of Russia’s war.”
He added that NATO is closely monitoring the situation and that the alliance is “actively consulting” the matter within the alliance, with Ukraine, and with NATO’s “Indo-Pacific partners.”
According to Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh, United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-Hyun are set to discuss the matter in Washington soon.
The Pentagon spokesperson further stated that the decision, as of now, is that there are no standing limitations imposed on the use of U.S.-supplied weapons on North Korean troops deployed in the war.
Singh said in a statement, “If we see DPRK [the official name for North Korea] troops moving in towards the front lines, they are co-belligerents in the war… This is a calculation that North Korea has to make.”
Previous reports also suggested that North Korea deployed troops in Ukraine with the intention of helping them develop hands-on experience in active combat and the use of their nation’s weapons while testing out the arms and ammunition themselves.
It is worth noting that the deployment of North Koreans in Ukraine marks the first time a foreign government has sent uniformed troops to support Russian war efforts—since the other foreign soldiers previously fighting in the Russian ranks were mercenaries.
On the other hand, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov did not confirm the deployment of North Korean troops in Ukraine but mentioned that Pyongyang and Moscow signed a joint security pact in June 2023.
