(LibertySociety.com) – In the final stretch of the campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris faces mounting pressure to shift her focus to core economic and daily-life issues to energize her base. According to a report from the Associated Press, critics within the Democratic Party worry that Harris’s campaign approach, with a heavy emphasis on bipartisan cooperation, has lost touch with the party’s core concerns. Senator Bernie Sanders, a leading voice among progressives, emphasized that Harris should concentrate on “bread-and-butter” issues that impact working-class Americans, rather than her current strategy focused on unity messaging.
Sanders noted that while he has appeared at numerous Harris-related campaign events in recent weeks, they’ve mostly targeted rural audiences rather than the nominee’s typical supporters. In his view, Harris’s approach risks alienating those Democrats who need assurance that the party is addressing everyday concerns like inflation, healthcare costs, and education funding. Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, also noted the disconnect between Harris’s populist advertising, which tackles key economic concerns, and her live events, which often feature prominent Republicans like Liz Cheney and focus more on national unity.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump continues his straightforward appeal to working-class Americans, reiterating messages that question whether citizens are “better off now than four years ago.” At recent rallies, Trump’s messaging has received enthusiastic responses from his base. Jason Miller, a senior adviser to Trump, argued that Harris’s focus on Trump as a foil rather than her own policy plans has weakened her platform. Miller highlighted that, from their perspective, Harris has yet to fully engage voters on how her policies will improve their lives on fundamental issues like jobs, economic growth, and border security.
As both candidates race to secure key battleground states, Harris’s team may need to pivot quickly if they hope to mobilize their base in the same way Trump’s rallies have energized his. With critical elections pending, the next few weeks are crucial for both candidates to solidify their messaging.
