A major Australian airline had to apologize to its passengers after showing an R-rated movie with nudity to the entire flight, including small children.
Knewz.com has learned that the film at the center of this airline controversy is Daddio, starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn.
The 2023 film follows the story of a woman who gets into a taxi at New York airport, and over the course of the ride, tells the driver about her unfortunate decisions that led to an affair with a married man.
The incident occurred on a Qantas flight from Sydney Airport to Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan.
According to reports, the flight had already been delayed due to a problem with the in-flight entertainment system—meaning passengers could not individually choose which film to watch during the trip.
As a result, the airline crew was left with a limited collection of movies they could screen for every passenger on board.
It has been reported that this prompted the crew to consult some of the passengers about which film should be played on the flight, during which they received several requests to screen the 2023 romance Daddio, and the R-rated film was chosen to play for the entire flight.
However, everyone on board soon realized that the Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn starrer was certainly not meant for all ages, as it featured graphic language, nudity, and sex scenes.
After the flight, disgruntled passengers took to social media to voice their anger toward the airlines for subjecting them and their children to an R-rated film.
One of the passengers stated that they had to forcibly block their child’s view of the screen after around 40 minutes of frontal nudity.
Another wrote that “audible gasps” could be heard throughout the flight as passengers slowly began to realize what they – and their kids – were watching.
According to reports, the film Daddio “centers on an exploration of both characters’ past and present relationships, sex and power dynamics, as well as loss and grief,” and is rated R for “strong language, sexual material, and graphic nudity.”
The airline crew immediately attempted to fix the individual screens of the passengers who did not want to watch the film.
As soon as it became clear that turning off the film for individual passengers was not possible, the crew turned off the film altogether.
For the rest of the flight, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 – a PG-rated film – was played for the passengers instead.
A Qantas Airlines spokesperson apologized to the passengers regarding the issue, promising that there would be a review of how the film got chosen for screening in the first place.
“The movie was clearly not suitable to play for the whole flight and we sincerely apologize to customers for this experience,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
“All screens were changed to a family friendly movie for the rest of the flight, which is our standard practice for the rare cases where individual movie selection isn’t possible.”
“We are reviewing how the movie was selected,” the spokesperson added.
